14th Annual Peacock Golf Classic - June 5, 2009 The activities on the 5th will begin at 9 a.m. with registration. Teams will be on the course at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start followed by dinner, prizes and awards at the conclusion of play. Participants in the four-person scramble will enjoy free range balls, raffle prizes, flight trophies, a lunch, and beverages on the course, as well as hole contests including closest to the pin, men's and women's long drive, and longest putt. A hole-in-one on hole #9 will also earn that lucky participant $10,000. Many more games and challenges are also planned for many of the holes on the course. (MORE)
Peacock Volleyball Adds Two Iowa Prep Recruits Emily Sparks, a 5'5 defensive specialist, was a member of the Iowa City High volleyball team as well as Iowa Rockets Volleyball Club with future teammate Kayla. She also competed in track and softball and was named honorable mention all conference last year in softball. Kayla Wagner, a 6'3 Middle, led Ottumwa High School to a 15-1 Conference record this past season. She led Ottumwa in kills and blocks with 2.67 kills per game and .80 blocks per game. In addition, she finished the season with a .343 hitting percentage. Kayla was selected all conference and all district her senior year. She also played for Iowa Rockets Volleyball Club under the direction of Chin Nguyen. (MORE)
Upper Iowa Signs Three New Peacocks for Volleyball Upper Iowa University Head Volleyball Coach Shari Robertson announced the commitment of three student-athletes that will continue their academic and volleyball careers at Upper Iowa. The future Peacocks include Alexandra Fink of Oakfield, Wisconsin, Danielle Gernes of Kellogg, Minnesota, and Melissa Mueller of Woodbury, Minnesota. (MORE) Upper Iowa University Names David Miller as Director of Athletics Upper Iowa University President Dr. Alan Walker announced today that David Miller will be the new Director of Athletics. Miller will begin his duties on Monday, May 18. Miller, a Manning, Iowa native spent the last two years as the Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, an NCAA Division II institution with Division I men's ice hockey. (MORE) Upper Iowa Athletics Department Honors 149 Student-Athletes The Athletics Department of Upper Iowa University recognized 149 student-athletes who earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll between games of the Winona State-Upper Iowa basketball doubleheader last Wednesday night. The honored group includes student-athletes, team managers, student assistant coaches, and student athletic trainers. To earn consideration for the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a minimum 3.00 grade-point average during the fall 2008 semester and/or achieved a cumulative 3.00 GPA or better. Each student received a certificate for his/her achievement from Kent McElvania, Interm Director of Athletics, and an array of Upper Iowa's faculty. (MORE) Fifteen Peacocks Earn Northern Sun All-Academic Team Honors The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced its All-Academic Teams for the 2008 fall athletic season and fifteen Peacock student-athletes earned recognition. To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student-athlete must have also reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution represented with one full year completed at their institution. (MORE) UIU Volleyball Opens 2009 Recruiting Class with Iowa Prep Upper Iowa Head Volleyball Coach Shari Robertson announced that Maryn Fulton, from Fairfield, Iowa, has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and volleyball careers at Upper Iowa University. Maryn Fulton, a 6'1 Middle Blocker, led Fairfield High School to a 34-6 record this past season. She averaged 4.26 kills per game, which ranks #3 in the state for Class 3A. Maryn was selected all-conference, all-district, and 2nd team all-state her junior year. She was also just named Southeast Conference Player of the Year for the second year in a row. With Fulton leading the way, Fairfield advanced to the Class 3A state tournament this past week in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. (MORE) Upper Iowa Falls in Three to Bemidji State The Peacock volleyball team took the floor Saturday afternoon looking to end their season with a win and a new program record for wins in a season. The visiting Beavers of Bemidji State University had different plans as they defeated the home team in three sets. The closest set of the match came as play opened; BSU took the set 25-21 and then finished off UIU with 25-19 victories in sets two and three. Upper Iowa finished their 2008 season with 11 wins and 21 losses. The team tied the program's record for wins in a season. The Peacocks had a 3-17 record in NSIC action and finished in a tie with Bemidji State and U-Mary for 12th place. (MORE) Peacocks Start Strong, but Fall to #17 Bulldogs The Peacock volleyball team took the floor tonight with great emotion and gave the #17 Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth all they could handle. Upper Iowa, playing in the next to last game this season, took Prochaska Court on a mission to finish their year by playing at a high level. UIU took the first set against the nationally ranked UMD squad, 25-19. The Bulldogs seemed regrouped after the first set and hit their way past the host Peacocks. Minnesota Duluth won the next three sets by 25-15, 25-18, and 25-16 scores. With the loss, Upper Iowa saw their record drop to 11-20 overall and 3-16 in Northern Sun matches, while Minnesota Duluth improved to 23-8 overall and 14-5 in conference action. (MORE) |
