Less than twelve hours after leaving Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport, the Upper Iowa volleyball team was back on the court to face Hastings College. UIU left on Friday night having won their first two matches of the season a little after 9:00 p.m. Things looked great at the outset of the game as Upper Iowa took an early 6-0 lead, but Hastings rallied back and took the wind out of the Peacocks’ sails.

The first game with Hastings was the closest game of the match. Upper Iowa took the early lead, but lost the lead late in the game and finished on the low side of the 30-24 score. The team never regained their stride and dropped game number two 30-10. Hastings completed the sweep in game three with a 30-18 win. The numbers weren’t pretty for Upper Iowa as the team hit -.037 for the match with 27 attacking errors. Some of the positives could be found in Darcy Hageman’s play. Hageman registered 10 kills, 12 digs, and one ace. Keri Vance handed out 25 assists and recorded 14 digs, while Keely Jones, 4 solo blocks, and Beth Deutmeyer, 3 solo blocks and 1 assisted, did their best to defend the net. The loss evened the Peacocks’ record at 2-2 on the season.

Upper Iowa regrouped and returned to the court for their final game of the weekend tournament hosted by St. Ambrose. The team lined up against Quincy University. Upper Iowa, still shell shocked from the first match of the day, took a while to get started in game one. Quincy was able to take the first game by a score of 30-19 as the Peacocks registered 10 kills, but 9 attack errors. UIU began to find their game, but still came up short as they dropped game two 30-21. The Peacocks made a run at winning game three, however Quincy was able to shut the door on the sweep with a 30-28 win.

Upper Iowa was able to register some more positive numbers in the second match of the day, but still not what the women in blue expect of themselves. Hageman drove home another 10 kills and had three solo blocks and one assisted. Vance picked up 30 assists in the match, while Vance and Shea Meyermann each picked up 12 digs. Deutmeyer tallied 9 kills, while Meyermann hit 8 kills. The loss dropped UIU’s record to 2-3 on the young season.

Upper Iowa will host Lewis University on Tuesday night, September 4th, in their home opener. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Dorman Gymnasium.
