Upper Iowa Wins Two in St. Ambrose Tournament

The Upper Iowa volleyball team traveled to Davenport, Iowa this weekend to play four matches in the St. Ambrose Tournament. Following their season opening loss to St. Cloud State, a very hard fought battle, the Peacocks were looking to get into the win column early Friday night.
 
The first match of the night was against in-state for Ashford. The Peacocks defeated the Saints in four games by the scores 30-12, 30-24, 21-30, and 30-24. Shea Meyermann, 17 kills, and Darcy Hageman, 15 kills, led the offensive attack for the women in blue. The digs leader in the match was Nicole Burger, who registered 22. Kim Humpal led the Peacocks’ serving attack with 3 aces, while Darcy Hageman and Beth Deutmeyer controlled the net with a combined 4 solo blocks and 7 assisted blocks. Setter Keri Vance handed out 48 assists in the match.
 
In the second match of the night, Upper Iowa took the court against the host, St. Ambrose. The Queen Bees defended their floor in the first game winning 30-26, but the Peacocks found their stride and won game two 34-32 to tie the match at 1-1. The Peacocks’ win of game two shifted the momentum in their favor and the team took advantage. Upper Iowa won game three, 30-27, and game four, 30-26, to take the match in four games and improve their record to 2-1.
 
Four Peacocks led a balanced offensive attack; Hageman (23 kills), Keely Jones (16 kills), Meyermann (14 kills), and Deutmeyer (5 kills) combined for an impressive 58 kills, while only committing 21 attack errors. Vance (39 assists) and Tatiana Jackson (31 assists) combined to set up the consistent attack. The Peacocks also attacked with their serve; Vance and Meyermann each recorded 3 aces. On defense Meyermann led the team in digs in with 31, while the team combined for 9 solo blocks and 12 assisted blocks. Jones (3 solo, 3 assisted), Deutmeyer (3 solo, 2 assisted), and Hageman (2 solo, 3 assisted) led Upper Iowa’s efforts at the net.
 
After the game Coach Dave Jackson said, “I think the team did a great job staying focused and pushing through crucial moments in games tonight. Especially when you consider that tonight was only our second and third matches of the year. The team is showing a lot of improvement especially in the area of ball control and we are staying very aggressive in our play.”
 
Upper Iowa is back on the court again Saturday morning, Sept. 1, at 9:00 a.m. The Peacocks will take on the Broncos of Hastings College. The final match of the tournament pits Upper Iowa against the Lady Hawks of Quincy University. The match will take place at 1:00 p.m.
