The Upper Iowa Women’s Tennis Team was back on the courts today. The Peacocks traveled to Washburn University to compete in the ITA Regional. The tournament hosts many of the best teams and individuals in the Midwest. After the first day of action, the Peacocks have made some noise to let the region know that tennis is back in a big way at Upper Iowa.
Coach Chad Fenwick feels good about his team. “I think we have sent a message to the teams in the region. It was great to see the ladies competing against some of the best tennis players around and holding their own. Kelsey did a great job in her singles matches today and we are looking forward to having her go back out there tomorrow.” Kelsey Montgomery, one of the ten freshmen Peacocks on the Tennis team, defeated Katie Katterheinrich of Winona State in two sets; 6-1, 6-4. In the second round, Montgomery defeated Claire Bryan of Nebraska-Kearney in two sets; 6-1, 6-0. She has moved into the quarterfinals and will face the #8 seed tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. Kasey Huisman lost to Lindsy Blair of Truman State; 6-2, 6-1. Erin Kelley lost to Lacey Luina of Emporia State; 6-1, 6-0. Mallery Cox lost to Ashley Erickson of Colorado State-Pueblo; 7-5, 6-0. All three Peacocks will be in action tomorrow in consolation singles matches. The Peacocks sent two doubles teams to the courts Friday afternoon. Kasey Huisman and Erin Kelley teamed up and were looking good early, but lost their lead and fell to a doubles team from Mankato State; 8-5. The second doubles team, Mallery Cox and Katie Rodewald, fell to a doubles team from Truman State; 8-2. The Peacocks will finish up action for the weekend tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. |
