Women’s Tennis is back. For the first time since the move from NCAA Division III to II, women’s tennis is once again a part of the Upper Iowa Athletic Department. Coach Chad Fenwick has his young team ready to show what they can do.
The team debuted against Wartburg College in a home match on the newly resurfaced tennis courts on campus. The Peacocks showed their youth and limited college experience during the doubles matches. Upper Iowa lost all three matches. Kasey Huisman (FR/Aplington, IA) and Mallery Cox (Anchorage, AK) lost 8-5; Katie Rodewald (JR/Andover, MN) and Erin Kelley (FR/Rockford, IL) lost 8-3; and Shelby Lilly (FR/Milton, WI) and Molly Klocke (FR/Dixon, IL) lost 8-4. The Peacocks earned their 2 wins in the Singles competition where Kasey Huisman defeated the Knight’s #1 player in straight sets, 6-1 / 6-2, and Erin Kelley defeated the Knight’s #4 player in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7. Wartburg won the remaining four singles matches. Upper Iowa’s #2 Kelsey Montgomery (FR/Stewartville, MN) was defeated 6-4, 6-2. UIU’s #3 Mallery Cox was defeated 6-1, 6-2. UIU’s #5 Katie Rodewald was defeated 6-1, 6-2. UIU’s #6 Molly Klocke was defeated 6-4, 6-2. Wartburg took the overall competition by a score of 7-2. After the matches Coach Fenwick said, “It was good to get out here and play. Obviously we are a young team. We have 10 young women that are in their first year of college and our 2 upper classmen are in their first year of collegiate tennis. I am looking forward to great improvement as the ladies get more comfortable playing at this level.” The Peacocks return to action at home this Thursday, the 7th, verse Clarke College at 3:30 pm. |
