The UIU women’s tennis team traveled west to take the court against the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Friday. The match was the Peacock’s spring season opener, while UNI had already competed in the Hawkeye Invitational and had a match with Wisconsin-Green Bay, which they won 7-0.
The Peacocks lost all three doubles matches to open the competition. Kasey Huisman and Erin Kelley lost 8-0; Mallery Cox and Kelsey Montgomery lost 8-2; and Katie Rodewald and Shelby Lilly lost 8-2. Upper Iowa continued to fight hard but struggled to win games in their singles’ matches. Montgomery lost 6-1, 6-2. Huisman and Lilly each lost 6-0, 6-0. Cox and Rodewald each lost 6-0, 6-1, while Erin Kelley lost 6-1, 6-0. The Panthers took the overall competition by a score of 7-0. After the matches Coach Fenwick said, “We got beat by a talented and experienced Northern Iowa team. The team played hard today and I don’t feel that the scores were indicative of our effort and play. No one quit during their matches which is a testament to our character.” The Peacocks return to action in March (11th-15th) with seven matches over spring break including a stop at Division I Austin Peay and six matches in Hilton Head, South Carolina. |
