Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Officially Expands to 14 Teams

St. Paul, Minn. - Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Commissioner Butch Raymond has announced the results from the NSIC Board of Directors teleconference call dealing with expansion. The Board of Directors, consisting of the ten NSIC Presidents/Chancellors, voted to expand the NSIC to 14 teams with the addition of Augustana College (Sioux Falls, S.D.), the University of Minnesota Duluth (Duluth, Minn.), Minnesota State University Mankato (Mankato, Minn.) and Saint Cloud State University (Saint Cloud, Minn.). These four institutions, which were all voted on individually, will begin participating within the NSIC in the 2008-09 season.

Nineteen Peacocks Earn Northern Sun All-Academic Team Honors

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced its All-Academic Teams for the 2007-08 spring athletic season and nineteen Peacock student-athletes earned recognition.

To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student-athlete must have also reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution represented with one full year completed at their institution.

Upper Iowa Finishes Sixth in 2007-08 NSIC All-Sport Standings

The Upper Iowa Athletics Department climbed three spots this year in the NSIC All-Sports Standings. The Peacocks ranked 6th this year, only five points away from 4th place U-Mary and four and a half points away from 5th place MSU Moorhead. Upper Iowa's success is due, in large part, to its three NSIC Championships in Wrestling, Women's Tennis, and Women's Golf. But 6th place could not have been attained without Baseball (2nd), Women's Soccer (3rd), and Men's Golf (3rd), who all had very successful seasons as well.

Three Peacocks Earn All-Conference Honors

St. Paul, Minn. - The 2007-08 NSIC Women's Tennis All-Conference team has been released based on the results of the NSIC conference tournament. Kasey Huisman of Aplington, Iowa earned All-Conference honors at #2 singles, while Kelsey Montgomery of Stewartville, Minnesota earned All-Conference honors at #4 singles. Jennifer Bradfield of Fairfield, Iowa earned honorable mention honors at #1 singles. Bradfield and Huisman combined at #1 doubles to make All-Conference.

Upper Iowa Finishes Third at NSIC Tournament

Minneapolis, Minn. - Winona State won their fourth straight NSIC Women's Tennis Tournament Championship and seventh in the past eight years as they edge Southwest Minnesota State 58 to 54 in the final standings. Upper Iowa was a close third with 53 team points. Bemidji State's Kali Welu was voted NSIC MVP, while Diana Naatz of Southwest Minnesota State was named NSIC Senior of the Year. Heather Pierce of Winona State was honored as NSIC Freshman of the Year and Upper Iowa's Chad Fenwick was named NSIC Coach of the Year.

Upper Iowa Puts Themselves in Position for Championship Run Tomorrow

The Peacock women's tennis team completed the first two rounds of the singles tournament and the first round of the doubles tournament at the Baseline Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

Upper Iowa's three doubles teams have all reached the semifinals and will all play tomorrow. Number one through number five singles all won their first match of the day. Jennifer Bradfield, Kasey Huisman, and Kelsey Montgomery are all playing in the finals beginning tomorrow morning, while Mallery Cox and Erin Kelley will be playing in the third place singles match. Faith Atherton rebounded after a quarterfinal round loss. Atherton will now place for fifth place at number six singles.

Upper Iowa Takes 8-0 Record Into NSIC Tournament

The Peacock women's tennis team completed a perfect Northern Sun Conference regular season with four conference victories over the weekend. Upper Iowa defeated U-Mary (9-0), Bemidji State (7-2), UM, Crookston (9-0), and Northern State (9-0). The Peacocks lost only 2 of 36 matches played over the weekend. Thanks to the 8-0 NSIC record, the tennis team has earned the NSIC Regular Season Championship. Tennis becomes the third program at Upper Iowa to be crowned an NSIC Champion.

Peacock Spring Sports Affected by Strong Storms and Cold Temperatures

Peacocks Defeat Mustangs; Gain Sole Possession of 1st Place

The Upper Iowa women's tennis team met Southwest Minnesota State in Owatonna, Minnesota on Saturday for a match up of the two teams tied for first place in the Northern Sun Conference. The Peacocks swept through the doubles matches taking a 3-0 lead into singles where UIU was able to split the singles matches with SMSU to take the victory 6-3. Upper Iowa now sits atop the NSIC standing at 3-0 with wins against Winona State, MSU Moorhead, and Southwest Minnesota State.

Weekend Match Schedule Changed for Oncoming Weather in Minnesota

Upper Iowa Head Tennis Coach Chad Fenwick has announced that the two matches between the Peacocks and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State and the Wolves of Northern State scheduled for this Sunday in Marshall, Minnesota. Due to the heavy rains forecasted for Sunday, the match with Southwest Minnesota has been moved up to tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in Owatonna, Minnesota. The match with Northern State will be rescheduled at a later date.

Peacocks Fall Short Against Division I Opponents

The Upper Iowa women's tennis team fell short in their contests on Saturday and Sunday this past weekend. Upper Iowa lost 7-0 to the UW- Milwaukee Panthers on Saturday. The team then lost on Sunday, 7-0, to Western Illinois Leathernecks. Both matches against the Division I opponents took place in Macomb, Illinois.

Kelsey Montgomery (So./Stewartville, Minn.) has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's (NSIC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week. This honor is the eighteenth NSIC Player of the Week award earned by an Upper Iowa student-athlete this year and second by a Peacock tennis player.

Upper Iowa Ends Winona State Rule of NSIC Women's Tennis

The Upper Iowa women's tennis team defeated the Warriors of Winona State, 5-4, in a makeup of their meet from earlier in the season. Last season the Warriors won the conference regular season with an undefeated record including a tight 5-4 victory over the Peacocks. The meet came down to the match last year and it seemed like deja vu today when the meet came down to the decision at #5 singles.

Peacocks End Successful Spring Break Trip with Three Wins

The Upper Iowa women's tennis team traveled to Hilton Head, South Carolina over spring break and competed in five matches. The Peacocks won three matches against Olivet, East Stroudsburg, and Baldwin Wallace while dropping two matches to Kutztown and Slippery Rock. A sixth match began between Upper Iowa and Missouri Valley, but after the Peacocks took all three doubles contests, the skies opened up and rain cancelled the rest of the match.

Huisman Named NSIC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Kasey Huisman (So./Applington, Iowa) has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's (NSIC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week. This honor is the seventeenth NSIC Player of the Week award earned by an Upper Iowa student-athlete this year and first by a Peacock tennis player. Huisman has earned this honor twice in her career receiving the award once last year.
