14th Annual Peacock Golf Classic - June 5, 2009 The Athletics Department at Upper Iowa University is hosting their 14th Annual Peacock Golf Classic on Friday, June 5 at Big Rock Country Club in Fayette, Iowa. All the Peacock coaches and administration, including our new Director of Athletics, Dave Miller, will be at Big Rock early and on the course all day to visit with the UIU alumni and friends in attendance. The activities on the 5th will begin at 9 a.m. with registration. Teams will be on the course at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start followed by dinner, prizes and awards at the conclusion of play. Participants in the four-person scramble will enjoy free range balls, raffle prizes, flight trophies, a lunch, and beverages on the course, as well as hole contests including closest to the pin, men's and women's long drive, and longest putt. A hole-in-one on hole #9 will also earn that lucky participant $10,000. Many more games and challenges are also planned for many of the holes on the course. (MORE) Twenty-Five Peacocks Earn Northern Sun All-Academic Team Honors The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced its All-Academic Teams for the 2009 spring athletic season and twenty-five Peacock student-athletes earned recognition. To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student-athlete must have also reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution represented with one full year completed at their institution. (MORE) Peacock Season Ends with Loss to Mavericks Upper Iowa closed out their play in the 2009 Northern Sun Conference Tournament this afternoon in Marshall, Minn. The Peacocks (#8 seed) lost an elimination game to the Mavericks of Minnesota State (#5 seed), 8-6. The Peacocks scored the first run of the game and held leads of 3-2 and 5-2, but the Mavericks scored three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to rally from behind and win the game. After the day's two losses, the Peacocks cap their season with a 22-24 record overall, a 13-13 mark in NSIC regular season games, and an 8th place finish in the conference standings. (MORE) Mustangs Shutout Peacocks in NSIC Tournament Opener Upper Iowa opened their run in the 2009 Northern Sun Conference Tournament as the #8 seed this afternoon in Marshall, Minn. The Peacocks took the field against the #1 seeded Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. The Mustangs jumped out with seven runs in the first two innings and held the Peacocks to just three hits in the game. (MORE) Appelt Earns All-NSIC Postseason Honors The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced postseason awards for softball and Peacock third baseman, Kami Appelt has been named to the All-NSIC Second Team. Appelt started all 44 games for the Peacocks this season at third base; she batted .308, second on the team to Casey Coon. (MORE) Marauders Sweep Peacocks at Home The Peacock softball team was in action this afternoon at the Eischeid Softball Complex in Fayette as they played host to the Marauders of the University of Mary. The games were a make up for the teams' original double dip that had been postponed on March 28 due to flooding in Bismarck, N.D. that did not allow the Marauders to travel. U-Mary came away with the sweep on the day and kept their hopes alive for a tournament berth. After the losses, the Peacocks fell to .500 at 22-22 and 13-13 in the NSIC. (MORE) Peacocks Split with First Place Mustangs The Upper Iowa softball team wrapped up its weekend road trip Sunday in Marshall, Minnesota against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. The Peacocks got off to a slow start in game one of the doubleheader as they lost the opener, 7-2. In game two, the Peacock bats came to life and Upper Iowa handed the first-place Mustangs an 8-4 loss. Upper Iowa now sits in the eighth spot in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 13-11 conference record and a 22-20 mark overall. (MORE) |
