Concordia St. Paul used two strong pitching performances to sweep a doubleheader from Upper Iowa Saturday afternoon at Eischeid Complex. The Bears won the opener 7-1 and claimed the second game 1-0.
Upper Iowa (13-17) managed only two hits in the first game. Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, the Peacocks got on the board on Katie Kilburg's team-leading seventh home run of the season. Kami Appelt followed with a two-out single for the other UIU hit. Concordia St. Paul (15-8) pounded out 12 hits off UIU freshman Kacie Estes. Kristen Schmidt silenced the Peacock bats, striking out 10 in her complete-game effort. The second game was a pitchers' dual. Two Bears pitchers combined to limit Upper Iowa to four hits while striking out 10. Angie Weber was even better for the Peacocks. The senior allowed only three hits and struck out 11. Weber's only mistake was surrendering a leadoff home run to Kelly Schweitz in the fifth inning. Upper Iowa threatened in the seventh inning with runners on first and second with only one out, but could not push across the tying run. Katie Kilburg had two of UIU's four hits. Jena Kilburg and Andrea McShane also singled. Upper Iowa visits St. Cloud State Sunday at 1 p.m. |
