The first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week have been named and two Peacocks earned the honor. Lauren Smith, a senior forward from Flint, Michigan, has been named the NSIC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and Melissa Heitzman, a sophomore goal keeper from Ames, Iowa, has been named the NSIC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. These honors are the first and second NSIC Players of the Week earned by Upper Iowa student-athletes this year. The honors are also the first in the short NSIC history of the women’s soccer program.
Smith scored two goals and dished out two assists in the Peacocks opening two games. Smith scored the game winning goal in the season opener against Missouri Western State and later added another goal and an assist. Heitzman posted a shutout in the Peacocks’ second game last week. She made 9 saves in goal to help lead UIU to their second victory of the season as they defeated Northwest Missouri State 1-0. The Peacocks picked up their pair of home wins against MIAA members Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State. The Peacocks are outscoring their opponents 4-0 on the season. Upper Iowa travels to Lewis University for a match on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 29, and then to Drury University for a tournament along with the men’s team over the weekend, Sept. 1-2. |
