The Peacock Women’s Soccer Team earned their first victory of the year today. On the second day of their road trip to Michigan, Upper Iowa defeated the Northwood University Timberwolves 3-0 and evened their record at 1-1.

“We bounced back very well after a tough game yesterday against a very good Saginaw Valley State team. I was pleased with our attitude and intensity from the opening whistle today,” stated Coach Leonard.

The Peacocks got out to early lead when Erica Baedke (JR/Gowrie, IA) chipped the ball past the Timberwolves keeper in the 3rd minute following a corner kick and scramble in the box. Cara Maudlin (FR/Belleville, IL) was awarded the assist on the score. The second goal was “executed perfectly” according to Coach Leonard. In the 32nd minute, Jenni Lee (SO/Kenosha, WI) stood over the ball awaiting her corner kick. She struck a great ball that Cara Maudlin finished to the back of the net with a header. Upper Iowa took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Just 2 minutes into the second half, Lauren Smith (JR/Flint, MI) was issued a red card and ejected from the game. Upper Iowa played the final 43 minutes of the match a player down. The Peacock attack did not lessen even though they were outmanned. The Peacocks added a third goal in the 53rd minute as Amy Campbell (FR/Cary, IL) scored on a 15 yard strike on an assist from Jen Burnett (JR/Mesa, AZ).

“The girls really persevered today. To be down a player for that long and widen the margin on your opponent is impressive. I am proud of the great all-around effort the ladies put forth today,” said a happy Coach Leonard.

The women’s soccer team returns to action next Wednesday, August 30th, at the University of Indianapolis at 7 p.m.
