Upper Iowa Stays Undefeated with Victory over Mount Mercy

The Upper Iowa women's soccer team welcomed Mount Mercy in their home opener today. The Peacocks put two scores on the board early in the first half and added two more late in the second to take the match with the Mustangs 4-0. The victory kept the Peacocks undefeated early in their 2008 season with a 2-0-1 record.

UIU dominated the first half on the offensive end as they outshot their opponents 12 to 1. The Peacocks scored first in the ninth minute when Allison Clark knocked the ball into the net off a corner kick; Cara Mauldin and Amy Campbell both assisted on the goal. Campbell added an unassisted goal just one minute later to give Upper Iowa a 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs and Peacocks played an even second half until the final five minutes. Jamie Krusie got Upper Iowa in the scoring column again in the 87th minute as she drove one past the keeper after receiving a great pass from Leslie Willson. Campbell put an exclamation point on the game just 40 seconds later when she scored her second unassisted goal of the match and her fourth goal of the season.

Melissa Heitzman was strong in goal for the Peacocks as she picked up her first shutout victory of the season. The Peacock goalie made 6 saves in the net.

Upper Iowa (2-0-1) will head back out on the road this weekend as they travel to Wartburg and UW-Parkside. The Peacocks will face the Knights on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m, and then take the field against the Rangers on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 2:30 p.m.
