April 28, 2008... will be remembered as a banner day in the brief, NCAA Division II history of men's and women's golf at Upper Iowa University. The two teams have been invited to compete in their respective NCAA Regionals; the men will head to Findlay, Ohio to compete in the Central Regional, while the women will travel to Grand Forks, North Dakota to play at the North Regional.

Upper Iowa is the only Northern Sun school with both teams competing and only Minnesota State, soon to be an NSIC team, can boast the same in the region.

The men's and women's regionals are completely different though they do occur at the same time. Teams play a practice round on Sunday, May 4, and then play three rounds of competition from May 5-7. The dates of play are where the similarities end for the two sports.

The men's Central Regional is actually part of a Super Regional at Red Hawk Run Golf Course. The Great Lakes Regional also takes place at the course on the same dates. Eight teams and five individuals are invited to compete for each regional's championship. Only three teams and one individual advance out of the Central/Great Lakes Super Regional; each region's champion team, the next lowest team score from either region earns the final team nod, and the top individual not on one of the three qualifying teams move on to the National Championship in Houston, Texas. Out of the field of 90 golfers only 16 will make their way to the Lonestar State. The Peacock men's team is making their first-ever trip to an NCAA Regional and will play as the #6 team. Juniors Josh Wells and Craig Signorin have been invited to the last two regionals as individuals.

The women's North Regional is a tournament in and of itself. Six teams and three individuals will be competing to play on at the Championships in Houston. Last year the Peacock women's team finished in fourth place, but Rachael Schmidt earned the right to compete at the Championships in Florida as an individual by winning the tournament. Unlike the men's regional, the top two teams at each regional earn the right to play for the team title in Houston. Along with the top two teams, the top two individuals not on those teams are invited to compete as individuals in Texas. This invite marks the second time in as many years that the women's team has earned the right to compete as a team at the North Regional, but it will be the third appearance in a regional for Rachael and Rochelle Schmidt, who both competed as individuals as freshman in 2006. The women's North Regional will be fought over in Grand Forks, N.D. at the King's Walk Golf Course. The women enter the regional as the #2 team.
