Yankton, S.D. - Upper Iowa won its second consecutive NSIC Women's Golf Championship as they shot a final round of 317 for a final four round score of 1251. The Peacocks ran away with the championship as they finished 69 strokes ahead of second place finishers from Concordia-St. Paul (1320). Winona State finished in third place (1341) while Southwest Minnesota State came in fourth with a 1401 final score. Rachael Schmidt dominated the field as she sprinted to medalist honors as she finished seven over par (295), 19 strokes ahead of sister and second place finish Rochelle Schmidt (314). Laura Taylor placed 5th for the Championships with a 319, while Jill Preeshl ended the four rounds with a 327 to land in 6th place. Lindsey Holien finished the tournament just one stroke outside of the top ten in 11th place with a 336. Glenna Meyer competed as an individual in the last two rounds and shot 172 (83-89). After the Peacocks' second NSIC Title in as many years, Head Coach Chad Markuson had the following thoughts, "This title is another feather in the golf program's hat. We're excited to compete with the new schools coming in next year." Region teams Minnesota State, Augustana and North Dakota were invited to play at the tournament as well; their scores did not count for this year's NSIC Championship. Compared to Upper Iowa's 626 (309-317) the past two days, Minnesota State shot 640 (310-330), Augustana put together a 651 (321-330), and North Dakota finished with a 657 (328-329). Coach Markuson continued with thoughts on Rachael Schmidt, the NSIC Championships Medalist, "To put together a seven-over, 295 over four rounds and win by 19 strokes is very impressive. She has raised her game to a new level during the championship rounds. It has been fun to watch her play over the last two days. She hit one of the best shots I have seen today with a 5-wood to 8 feet from the flagstick on eighteen." First Team All-Tournament Second Team All-Tournament Final Team Standings |
