Two Peacocks Earn National Academic All-American Honors

Two members of the Upper Iowa University women's golf team have been named as National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar recipients at the NCAA Division II level. The two honorees are Laura Taylor (Woodbury, Minnesota) and Lindsey Holien (Ossian, Iowa). The honor is the second for Taylor, who earned the honor last year as well.

The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50% (Division I) or 66% (Division II & III) of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Officially Expands to 14 Teams

St. Paul, Minn. - Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Commissioner Butch Raymond has announced the results from the NSIC Board of Directors teleconference call dealing with expansion. The Board of Directors, consisting of the ten NSIC Presidents/Chancellors, voted to expand the NSIC to 14 teams with the addition of Augustana College (Sioux Falls, S.D.), the University of Minnesota Duluth (Duluth, Minn.), Minnesota State University Mankato (Mankato, Minn.) and Saint Cloud State University (Saint Cloud, Minn.). These four institutions, which were all voted on individually, will begin participating within the NSIC in the 2008-09 season.

Rachael Schmidt Wins U.S. Women's APL Qualifying Medal

Rachael Schmidt has never played in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship before, mainly because until fairly recently she was unaware of its existance.She found out about the tournament for the best public course players in the country this spring, when someone at her home course, Elk River Golf Club, suggested that she should try to qualify.On Wednesday, Schmidt made her first attempt at qualifying. It was an impressive debut. Despite some issues with her putter, she shot a 1-over-par 73 and claimed medalist honors by four strokes.

Schmidt Named to the Duramed FUTURES Tour NGCA Division II All-American Team

The Division II All-American teams presented by the Duramed FUTURES Tour and the National Golf Coaches Association, or NGCA, have been released and one Peacock has earned a spot. Rachael Schmidt (Elk River, Minn.) was named to the Second Team. This is the third time Schmidt has been named to the NGCA All-American team. She earned a spot on the Honorable Mention Team both her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Nineteen Peacocks Earn Northern Sun All-Academic Team Honors

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced its All-Academic Teams for the 2007-08 spring athletic season and nineteen Peacock student-athletes earned recognition.

To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student-athlete must have also reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution represented with one full year completed at their institution.

Upper Iowa Finishes Sixth in 2007-08 NSIC All-Sport Standings

The Upper Iowa Athletics Department climbed three spots this year in the NSIC All-Sports Standings. The Peacocks ranked 6th this year, only five points away from 4th place U-Mary and four and a half points away from 5th place MSU Moorhead. Upper Iowa's success is due, in large part, to its three NSIC Championships in Wrestling, Women's Tennis, and Women's Golf. But 6th place could not have been attained without Baseball (2nd), Women's Soccer (3rd), and Men's Golf (3rd), who all had very successful seasons as well.

Rachael Schmidt (Jr./Elk River, Minn.) shot a 76 (+4) on the fourth and final day of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships. The tournament was played at the Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas. Schmidt teed off on the back nine in one of the last groups today. Schmidt, who is playing in her third NCAA Division II Championship, moved up two more spots today. She began the day tied for 17th after a 76 on day one and a pair of 77's on days two and three put her fourteen strokes over par. Schmidt finished her third Championship in a tie for 15th place at eighteen over par after 72 holes.

GRAND FORKS, N.D.--Led by individual champion Sara Wolfe, Nebraska-Omaha cruised to a 27-stroke victory at the 2008 NCAA Division II Women's Golf North Region Championship today at King's Walk Golf Course and earned a national championship berth in the process.Augustana, which had entered today's final round in last place, shot a 308 to claim second place by one stroke over Minnesota State and Upper Iowa, earning the other team berth for the NCAA Division II Women's Golf ChampionshipTruman State's Kaytie Spangler (75-76-73--224) and Upper Iowa's Rachael Schmidt (78-73-73--224), who each tied for second place, captured the two individual berths for nationals. Spangler and Schmidt finished the three-day tournament at eight over par.

Peacocks Remain in Third after Day Two at NCAA North Regional

GRAND FORKS, N.D.--For the second consecutive day Nebraska-Omaha shot a 15-over-par 303 and will take a 10-shot lead into tomorrow's third and final round at the 2008 NCAA Division II Women's Golf North Region Championship at King's Walk Golf Course.

Minnesota State remains in second place after shooting an 18-over-par 306. The Mavericks are 10 strokes behind UNO and hold a 10-shot cushion over third-place Upper Iowa.

The Peacocks are in third place after shooting a 316 on day one. Rochelle Schmidt led Upper Iowa with a 77 and is tied for 7th, while her sister Rachael came in with a 78 and is tied for 10th. Freshman Jill Preeshl tied for 15th and carded a 79 and sophomore Laura Taylor turned in an 82. Lindsey Holien rounded out the Peacocks' day with a 92.

Peacock Golf Teams Ready to Open Play at Regional Tournaments

The Peacock golf teams both hit the course for a practice round at their respective NCAA Regionals this afternoon. The women are competing as the #2 seed in the NCAA North Regional in Grand Forks, N.D., while the men are playing as the #6 seed in the NCAA Central Regional in Findlay, Ohio. Both teams are playing on links-style courses. The women at King's Walk Golf Course and the men at Red Hawk Run Golf Course.

Two Peacocks Earn NSIC Postseason Honors; Three Named All-Conference

St. Paul, Minn. - The 2007-08 NSIC Women's Golf All-Conference team has been announced as voted on by the league coaches. Upper Iowa's Rachael Schmidt was named NSIC Golfer of the Year while Concordia-St. Paul's Molly Noser was named NSIC Newcomer of the Year. Chad Markuson was voted on by his peers as NSIC Women's Golf Coach of the Year after leading the Peacocks to a second straight NSIC Championship.
