Second Half Rally Comes Up Short as Peacocks Fall at Home
Head Coach Mike Brown Resigns Upper Iowa University head women's basketball coach Mike Brown has resigned his position, effective immediately, and will be reassigned within the athletic department for the remainder of his contract. Upper Iowa Director of Athletics David Miller stated, "I want to take this opportunity to thank Mike Brown for his service to Upper Iowa University and the Athletics Department. Coach Brown is a loyal and dedicated individual who worked tirelessly on behalf of the Women's Basketball program. Basketball is his life and he has devoted himself to this program. We thank him and wish him well in the future." Brian Dolan, the Peacock head men's basketball coach, will assume head coaching duties of the women's basketball program for the final month of the season. Dolan began his coaching career with the women's basketball program at William Jewell College. (MORE) Warriors Invade Dorman; Defeat Peacocks The Upper Iowa women's basketball team returned to Dorman Gym Saturday night after picking up a win in Kansas City, Missouri over Rockhurst University during the week. The Peacocks welcomed the Warriors of Winona State University for the NSIC contest. UIU opened the contest well, but couldn't keep up with the quick scoring of WSU. The visitors won the game 90-57 to improve to 13-7 and 8-5 in the NSIC, while the home team fell to 2-18 overall and 0-13 in conference action. (MORE) Peacocks Emerge Victorious in Non-Conference Road Test The Upper Iowa women's basketball team traveled to Kansas City, Mo., Wednesday night to play their final non-conference game of the 2009-10 season. The Peacocks took on the Hawks of Rockhurst University in a return game of last year's season-opening overtime thriller which saw the Hawks leave Dorman Gym with a 87-79 victory. Fortunately for the Peacocks, the Hawks wouldn't be able to keep their one-point halftime lead and it was UIU taking the non-conference road contest, 58-54. Rockhurst led throughout the majority of the first half, this was before a Lana Otting layup put Upper Iowa in front, 16-15 with 6:08 to go before the halftime break. Otting scored the next two baskets for UIU, which sandwiched a Rockhurst bucket to give the visitors their largest led of the first half at three, 20-17. The teams went back and forth for the remaining 3:29 before an old-fashioned three-point play put Rockhurst on top, 25-24 heading into the locker rooms at halftime. (MORE) Peacocks Face Hawks and Warriors This Week This Week in Women's Basketball... The Peacocks travel to Kansas City, Mo. this Wednesday for their final non-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup of the 2009-10 season against the Hawks of Rockhurst University. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Mason-Halpin Field House. Rockhurst enters the mid-week clash with a 6-12 overall record which includes a 2-9 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and have lost five of their last six matchups. The Hawks are paced by senior Meghan Hurley who averages 8.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. (MORE) Dragons Shoot Past Peacocks on Road Upper Iowa took the floor with the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead tonight in Moorhead, Minnesota. Kenya Howard recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort for Upper Iowa. The Peacocks could not slow the Dragon offense as the home team shot 55% from the floor for the game. MSU Moorhead hit nine three-pointers including seven in the first half to run away with the Northern Sun victory. MSUM improves to 13-5 overall and 7-4 in the NSIC, while UIU falls to 1-17 overall and 0-12 in conference action. (MORE) Peacocks Drop Close NSIC Matchup with Golden Eagles The Upper Iowa women's basketball team continued Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this evening by travelling to Crookston, Minn. to battle the Golden Eagles of UM, Crookston. The Peacocks hung with the Golden Eagles for the entire 40 minutes of action, but couldn't grab the lead at the end of the contest and lost, 70-69. The home team held the advantage throughout the majority of the first half but four straight points by Cassandra Deiters and a two-point shot by Kenya Howard gave UIU a four-point advantage, 29-25, with 3:32 remaining before halftime. However, the visitors would not be able to hang on to the lead and found themselves down five points, 37-32, heading into the halftime break. Freshman Karina Berinobis lead the Peacocks at the halftime break with nine points on three-of-four shooting from three point land. Howard added seven points but was limited with three fouls. (MORE) Peacock Basketball Teams in Northern Minnesota for Pair of NSIC Match Ups The Upper Iowa men's and women's basketball teams are in Crookston, Minnesota today and will travel to Moorhead, Minnesota tomorrow for this weekend's Northern Sun Conference match ups. Both double headers are scheduled to begin with the women's game at 6 p.m. and the men's game to follow at approximately 8 p.m. The men's team enters the weekend with a 7-10 record overall and a 4-6 mark in the Northern Sun. The Peacocks are currently tied for 9th place in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston is in last place in the conference with a 0-9 record and a 3-12 mark overall, while MSU Moorhead is tied for 11th place with a 6-10 record overall and a 3-6 record in conference play. The women's team enters the road trip with a 1-15 record overall and a 0-10 mark in the NSIC. The Peacocks will look for their first conference win of the season Friday night against the Golden Eagles. UMC comes in with a 6-9 record overall and 4-5 mark in NSIC action, which places them in a tie for 9th place. MSU Moorhead is in fourth place with a 6-3 record in the NSIC and are 12-4 overall.
