Andrea Downs Named Northern Sun Conference Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week
 
Andrea Downs, a junior from Chicago, Illinois, has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week. This honor is the sixth NSIC Player of the Week award earned by an Upper Iowa student-athlete this year and marks the second time in as many weeks that a Peacock women's basketball player has been recognized. Last week, Britney Iredale won the award.

Downs averaged 24.7 points per game this week leading the Peacocks to a 2-1 record. The junior scored a career-high 41 points against Bemidji State, which was the second highest point total by an Upper Iowa women's player in the program's history. Downs set new UIU records for free throws made (20) and free throws attempted (21) in the 112-108 overtime win with BSU. The Chicago-native shot 54.5% from the field and 96.2% from the line (25-26) for the week and also averaged 4.3 assists per game. The team broke the program's record for points in a game with 112 versus Bemidji State. (MORE)

Mustangs Use 15-2 Run to Close Out Peacocks
 
Upper Iowa and Southwest Minnesota State tangled this afternoon in Sioux Falls, S.D. at the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest. The Peacocks and Mustangs played a hard fought game for thirty-four minutes and were tied at 59-59 after a UIU three-pointer with just under six minutes to play. The Mustangs closed the game out on a 15-2 run over the final six minutes. The Peacocks only hit one of their final twelve shots as SMSU pulled away for the 74-61 victory. After the loss, Upper Iowa's record dropped to 3-2, while Southwest Minnesota State improved to 6-2. (MORE)

Peacocks Hold Off Late Beaver Rally to Win in Overtime
Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) - Upper Iowa (3-1) held on for a 112-108 overtime win over Bemidji State (2-3) after leading by 21 with 14:32 to go in the game. The Peacocks were led by Andrea Downs, who dumped in 41 points on 10-of-17 shooting and 20-of-21 from the charity stripe. The Beavers outscored the Peacocks 65-48 in the second half after trailing 48-31 at halftime. Melissa Roberts hit a three with tie the game at 96 with 12 seconds to play forcing the extra session. Bemidji State's Heidi Matzke scored a team high 26 points while teammate Sydney Epema had 22. (MORE)

Peacock Basketball Competing at NSIC Holiday HoopsFest
The Peacock basketball teams are in Sioux Falls, South Dakota this weekend for the first annual Northern Sun Conference Holiday HoopsFest. Upper Iowa will face the Beavers of Bemidji State on Saturday and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday. The women's games will tip off at 1 p.m. both days with the men to follow at 3 p.m. All four games will be played at the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana College. The games will not count toward the season's NSIC standings. (MORE)

Peacocks Defeat Former Iowa Conference Foe with Dominant Second Half
The Peacock women's basketball team picked up their second win of the season by defeating a former Iowa Conference foe, 87-65. The game was close through the first twenty minutes as Upper Iowa led 32-30 when the teams hit the halftime break. The home team dominated the second half, much like they did last year when the teams met in Pella. UIU outscored Central 55-35 in the second stanza to take the victory by a 22-point margin. With the win, the Peacocks improve to 2-1 overall, while Central falls to 1-3 on the season. (MORE)

Britney Iredale Named Northern Sun Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Britney Iredale, a senior from Riverside, California, has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week. This honor is the fifth NSIC Player of the Week award earned by an Upper Iowa student-athlete this year and the second time that a Iredale has earned the honor in the last two seasons.

Iredale led Upper Iowa to a non-conference victory over Waldorf College last week with her second double-double of the season. The guard tallied 31 points and 12 boards while shooting 66.6% from the field (14-21). The senior also added 3 assists, 3 blocks and 5 steals. For the season, she is averaging 26 points, which leads the NSIC, and 11.5 rebounds, which is second in the league. (MORE)

Upper Iowa University Women's Basketball Coach Mike Brown has announced that Jennifer Herrick of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin has signed a National Letter of Intent to join to Peacock Women's Basketball program beginning the fall of 2009. (MORE)

Upper Iowa University Women's Basketball Coach Mike Brown has announced that Kylie Gottsman of Maple Grove, Minnesota has signed a National Letter of Intent to join to Peacock Women's Basketball program beginning the fall of 2009. (MORE)

Peacocks Use Second Half Run to Pull Away from Warriors
The Upper Iowa women's basketball team welcomed the warriors of Waldorf College to dorm gym for their second home game of the season. The Peacocks raced out to an eleven point lead after four minutes but Waldorf rallied to close the gap over the next five. As time wound down in the first half Upper Iowa began to pull away and led 44-32 at halftime. Waldorf cut the deficit to three points, 56-53, midway through the second half, but the home team outscored their guests 27-15 over the final twelve minutes of action. The 83-68 victory for UIU was their first of the season and evens their record at 1-1. Waldorf drops to 1-6 on the season with the loss. (MORE)
