LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. (Nov. 2) - Lander University (Greenwood, SC) defeated Upper Iowa University (Fayette, IA), 80-70, in the 2007 Disney's Division II Women's Tip Off Classic basketball tournament on Friday afternoon at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla.

Kianna Smith scored 19 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Bearcats (1-0). After missing five of her six attempts from the floor in the first half, Smith shot 7-of-8 in the second, including 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc. Tiara Good added 16 points (5-14 FG) and LaShonda Chiles contributed with 11 (4-16 FG). Stephanie Pond grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Shannon McKever also recorded double-digit boards with 10.

Andrea Downs scored 21 points to lead the Peacocks (0-1). Downs made 6-of-11 from the floor and made all nine of her attempts from the free throw line. Chelsea Petersen added 13 points (6-10 FG) and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Paige DeVine and Britney Iredale (4-10 FG) recorded 10 points apiece. Petersen pulled down 9 rebounds, while Christa Hammel and Downs each grabbed 7 boards.

The first half was nip-and-tuck for the first 16:31 with six lead changes and five ties. The Bearcats went on a 13-2 run to close out the first half with a 44-33 lead. The Peacocks started the second half scoring 14 of the first 18 points to bring the score to 48-47 at the 15:23 mark, but that was as close as they would get. Lander opened the lead back up with a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to extend the lead to 13 points (62-49). The Bearcats largest lead reached 19 points (76-57) with 6:20 left in the game and they held off a late rally by Upper Iowa to cruise to the 10-point win.

Lander University will next play University of Indiana - PA (Indiana, PA) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., while Upper Iowa University looks to rebound versus Assumption College at 12:00 p.m.
