Trevor Franklin Named to Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie Team Franklin put together a 28-6 campaign in his rookie season including a 16-0 mark in dual competition for the Peacocks. Of his 28 wins, 10 came by fall, 5 by major decision, and 2 by technical fall. The New York-native claimed the NCAA Super Regional 3's Championship at 133 pounds before posting a 1-2 record at the NCAA Championships in Houston. Franklin's most impressive victory of the year came against Rick Deubel (#15 NCAA DI) of Edinboro College (#15 NCAA DI) by decision 5-3. The young Peacock wrestler was named Outstanding Freshman wrestler for Upper Iowa at this year's Legends Dinner. (MORE)
14th Annual Peacock Golf Classic - June 5, 2009 The activities on the 5th will begin at 9 a.m. with registration. Teams will be on the course at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start followed by dinner, prizes and awards at the conclusion of play. Participants in the four-person scramble will enjoy free range balls, raffle prizes, flight trophies, a lunch, and beverages on the course, as well as hole contests including closest to the pin, men's and women's long drive, and longest putt. A hole-in-one on hole #9 will also earn that lucky participant $10,000. Many more games and challenges are also planned for many of the holes on the course. (MORE)
Upper Iowa Closes Book on 2008-09 Season with Legends Dinner The Upper Iowa wrestling program hosted their annual Legends Dinner and handed out their post-season awards. Tony Gehling was once again the team's leader in the classroom with a 3.71 GPA; he has earned the highest GPA on the team for the last four years. J.R. Baker claimed the most falls on the season with 13. Gehling and Baker tied for the most wins as each had their hand raised 29 times. The Most Improved Wrestler award also went to J.R. Baker, while Gehling was named the team's Most Inspirational Wrestler. Kyle Pedretti was named the team's Most Dedicated Wrestler, while Trevor Franklin earned the recognition as the team's Outstanding Freshman. The final award of the night, Outstanding Wrestler, was split between Upper Iowa's two NCAA All-Americans this year; Travis Eggers was the National Runner Up at 157 pounds and Mitch Norton finished 5th at 174 pounds at the Championships. (MORE) UIU Wrestling Receives Commitment from BGM-prep Upper Iowa head wrestling coach Heath Grimm announced today that Colby Kriegel has committed to continuing his academic and wrestling careers as an Upper Iowa Peacock. Kriegel, currently a student at BGM (Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcolm) High School, is a three-time state tournament qualifier and brings a high school record of 118-36 with him to Fayette. In his senior season, Kriegel compiled a record of 23-6 before losing his first two matches, including an overtime match, at the state tournament by a combined score of 3-1. (MORE) UIU Wrestling Signs Iowa Prep to National Letter of Intent Upper Iowa Head Wrestling Coach Heath Grimm announced the commitment of Carl Broghammer to Upper Iowa for the 2009-10 season. Broghammer, a Manchester, Iowa native, graduated from West Delaware High School where he was a three-time state qualifier. In his three state appearances, the grappler brought home one championship and one seventh place finish. In 2007, Broghammer finished 28-12 and qualified for the 3A State Tournament. The following year, the 189-pounder took home 7th place at the 2A State Tournament after winning the WaMaC title and posting a 30-6 record for the year. In 2008, he competed in the USA Nationals where he was able to claim fifth place in the Junior Division. As a senior, the Hawk wrestler compiled a 40-1 record and won the 2A State Championship at 189 pounds. Broghammer left the West Delaware wrestling program with a career record of 98-19. (MORE) Eleven Peacocks Earn Northern Sun All-Academic Team Honors The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced its All-Academic Teams for the 2009 winter athletic season and eleven Peacock student-athletes earned recognition. To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student-athlete must have also reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution represented with one full year completed at their institution. (MORE) Upper Iowa University Names David Miller as Director of Athletics Upper Iowa University President Dr. Alan Walker announced today that David Miller will be the new Director of Athletics. Miller will begin his duties on Monday, May 18. Miller, a Manning, Iowa native spent the last two years as the Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, an NCAA Division II institution with Division I men's ice hockey. (MORE) Travis Eggers Claims Runner Up Spot at NCAA Championships Travis Eggers took his shot at the 157 pound title tonight at the NCAA Championships in Houston, Texas. Eggers toed the line against Todd Meneely of Nebraska-Omaha. Meneely claimed the title at 149 pounds in the last two NCAA Championships before moving up a weight class this year. Near the end of the first period Meneely scored a takedown, but Eggers picked up an escape before the period ended. The only other point scored in regulation was an escape by Eggers in the third period after opening the period on bottom. The match moved to its first sudden victory period where both wrestlers were unable to score. Both wrestlers then rode the other out during the tie breaker periods to send the match to a second overtime. In the second sudden overtime period Meneely picked up his third National Championship title thanks to a takedown. Eggers was defeated in the end 4-2. Eggers' season ends with the junior's second All-American honor and second top three finish at the National Championships in as many years. The 157-pounder finished the year with a 22-9 record on the year. (MORE) Upper Iowa Completes Session III The Peacock wrestling team completed Session III at the NCAA Division II Championships in Houston, Texas this afternoon. At the conclusion of Session III, Travis Eggers had reserved a spot in the Championship finals tonight. Mitch Norton went 1-2 on the day to earn a fifth place finish, while Tony Gehling dropped both of his matches today to finish in 8th place. Upper Iowa finished the third session in a tie for 9th place with Mercyhurst in the team standings with 37 points. (MORE) |
