Peacocks Ranked #9 in Most Recent NWCA Top 20 Poll

NWCA Top 20 Coaches Poll Get Acrobat Reader

The Upper Iowa University Wrestling Program has earned the #9 ranking in the most recent NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches' Association's Top 20 Poll. The Peacocks received 92 points in taking the 9th spot. UIU moved up two spots from the last poll after claiming their second Northern Sun Conference championship and a third place finish at the NCAA North Regional. Six Peacock individuals are named in the individual rankings.

Junior Tyler Mumbulo leads the Peacocks in wins this season and is ranked #2 in the 125 pound class with a record of 29-5. Senior Tee Adams is listed as the #5 wrestler at 149 pounds with a 15-4 record. Sophomore Travis Eggers is ranked #7 at 157 pounds with a 27-8 record, while sophomore Mitch Norton secured his #6 ranking in the 165 pound class with a record of 19-7. Junior Matt Norton earned his first recognition in the rankings after an outstanding run at the North Regional where he finished second; he is ranked #6 at 197 pounds with a 14-13 record. Senior Dan Goodson remained steady at #5 in the Heavyweight class with a 22-8 record.

Upper Iowa claimed its second Northern Sun Wrestling Championship in as many years with a perfect 4-0 NSIC dual meet record. The Peacocks NSIC win streak is now at 9 straight duals. UIU competed in six tournaments this season. UIU wrestlers have placed 41 times in 88 attempts including crowning eight tournament champions. The eight championships were won by Brady Hakeman (174) twice, Trevor Franklin twice (133, unattached), Mumbulo, Norton, Steven Baker (141), and Kyle Pedretti (125, unattached). Mumbulo became the first Peacock grappler to place (8th) at the Midlands Tournament since 1973.

Upper Iowa has also gained recognition from the Northern Sun Conference for its early season success. Travis Eggers (11/15 and 2/25), Mitch Norton (11/20), and Tyler Mumbulo (12/3 and 2/4) have been named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week.

The Peacocks will send their six ranked wrestlers to compete in the National Championships this coming weekend. Upper Iowa University is the host for the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championships at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 14 and 15, 2008.
