Dec. 16, 2007
The Upper Iowa wrestling team debuted at home on Sunday afternoon. The Peacocks took the mat in their first dual of the 2007-08 season versus the Bulldogs of Truman State. UIU entered the dual ranked 6th in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, while TSU was one of four schools listed as having received votes just outside of the Top 20. The Peacocks used four wins by fall from Tyler Mumbulo and Tee Adams, as well as Mitch and Matt Norton to fuel their victory over the Bulldogs 34-9. Travis Eggers picked up a major decision victory, while Brady Hakeman and Dan Goodson each picked up wins by decision. Mumbulo (#5 NCAA) started the afternoon off for Upper Iowa with a bang. Mumbulo pinned Rob Nahlik just 52 seconds into the match and gave the Peacocks a 6-0 lead. Truman State tied the dual at 6-6 after winning by decision at 133 and 141 pounds. Dan Keller defeated UIU's Jacob Pedersen (#7 NCAA) by decision 4-2. After a scoreless first period, Keller registered a takedown in the second and a reversal in the third to account for his points. Pedersen got a reversal of his own in the third, but could not hit a final takedown. Mitchell Bainbridge defeated the Peacocks' Layne Greedy by decision 8-3. The wrestlers entered the third period tied at 2-2, but Bainbridge recorded an escape followed by a takedown and two near fall points to fuel the win. Adams (#3 NCAA) fell short of Mumbulo's pin pace by one second as he registered a win by fall in 53 seconds. Adams quickly dominated David Weber and turned a takedown into the win at 149 pounds. The fall gave UIU a 12-6 lead. Eggers (#7 NCAA) faced Andy Bader and quickly enforced his will on the Bulldog wrestler. The 157-pounder took a 6-1 lead after the first period, an 11-3 lead after the second, and won the match by major decision 15-3. Eggers scored four takedowns in the match and tallied two near fall points. The home team took a 16-6 lead after the major. Mitch Norton (#5 NCAA) and Blake Peterson (#7 NCAA) met at 165 pounds in the highlight match of the afternoon. Peterson gave the Bulldogs an early lead with a takedown and two near fall points in the opening minute of the match. Norton escaped but was taken down again and surrendered another two near fall points. The match moved to the second period with the Truman wrestler holding an 8-1 lead. Norton earned an escape and a takedown of his own in the second period to pull within 8-4 heading into the third. After Peterson escaped, Norton scored on a takedown to pull the score within three, but the Nashua-Plainfield prep did not stop there. He turned the takedown into possible near fall points and the eventual pin at 6:12 in the match. The pin capped off a great comeback by Norton and gave Upper Iowa a 22-6 lead in the dual. Brady Hakeman (#7 NCAA) toed the line next at 174 pounds against Dean Schultz. Hakeman set the tone in the first period with a takedown and three near fall points to take a 5-0 lead. Neither wrestler scored in the second period, but Hakeman built a 2:06 advantage in riding time heading to the third. Hakeman added an escape in the final period before being taken down to take the victory by decision 6-2. The win put the Peacocks ahead 25-6. At 184 pounds, freshman Stephan Swart wrestled hard, but fell to Bryan Isbell by decision 8-1. Isbell earned three takedowns in the match with Swart's lone point coming on an escape in the second period. Matt Norton faced off with the Bulldog's Tim Wolkey in the 184 pound match. Norton took a 3-2 lead into the second period after sandwiching a takedown and an escape around a Wolkey reversal. The second period began with Truman State down and Norton never let Wolkey get up. Just 43 seconds into the period, Norton turned the Bulldog and registered a win by fall (3:43). The fourth victory by fall gave the Peacocks a 31-9 advantage on the scoreboard. The final match of the dual featured Dan Goodson (#4 NCAA) and Matt Craig. A scoreless first period led to a scoreless second period, but Goodson built up two minutes of riding time. Goodson began the third period down knowing an escape could win him the match. The Peacock heavyweight did escape and took the victory 1-0 to give the Upper Iowa the dual meet victory 34-9. After the dual completed, Tyson Brown picked up a 5-0 exhibition match win in his final collegiate match. Brown faced John Horman and scored a takedown in the first period and added a reversal and a riding time point in the final period. Brown will graduate from Upper Iowa in December. The #6 Peacocks will next compete in the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29 and 30 in Evanston, Illinois and the Midwest Open on Dec. 29 in Des Plaines, Illinois. |
