The Peacocks’ Men’s Soccer Team returned to action after a two week break. The team played their first home game of the season verse Viterbo University. Viterbo defeated Upper Iowa 3-2 with a goal in the 86th minute to win.

Upper Iowa took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Craig Signorin in the 15th minute. Signorin used a quick touch around the Viterbo keeper and drove the ball to the back of the net. The goal was assisted by Carlos Perez-Villa. The Peacocks kept the pressure on and added a second goal ten minutes later in the 25th minute. Jeff Sabin finished a shot in the box that found a hole through many teammates and defenders on its way over the goal line. The goal was assisted by Casey Holm and Steve Fellhauer.

Upper Iowa took a 2-1 lead going into halftime and were in complete control of the game, but a red card in the 58th minute changed the complexion of the game. Joey Gates was given a red card after challenging a long, Viterbo pass that may have led to a break away. Gates definitely got the worst of the challenge. Not only did he receive the red card and leave the game, but he also took a swift kick to the head in the process. Upper Iowa was forced to play a man down for the final 32 minutes of the match.

Viterbo kept the pressure on UIU and eventually broke through the defense and took advantage of a mistake. Viterbo tied the score at 2-2 in the 77th minute and scored the game winner with only 4 minutes and change left on the clock.

The final outcome was another loss for the Peacocks, but the story has been the same throughout much of this year. The men’s team is in every game they play. This team has a chance to win every time they take the field and the players all believe it.

The Peacocks will remain at home and return to Patterson Soccer Field on the 8th of October against the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 3 p.m.
