Flaherty Nets Hat Trick

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team started the 2007 season strong with a 4-0 win over Upper Iowa University in the first night of Soccer Bowl XIV action.

Quincy took control of the game from the start, outshooting the Peacocks 19-0 in the first half, including 10 shots on goal. The Hawks were only able to put one ball past the Peacock keeper, Andy Youde.

Grant Ellison put the Hawks on the board with 37:55 on the clock, scoring on an assist from Bryan Scott.

Youde finished with 17 saves in the game but the Hawks consistent pressure was too much, as Quincy tallied three goals in the second-half.

Quincy freshman Sean Flaherty netted all three goals to record a hat-trick in his first collegiate game. Flaherty extended the Hawks lead to 2-0 with a goal at 64:37, scoring off a crossing pass from Steve Miller. Flaherty scored his second goal at 66:41 when he followed a rebound off a shot by teammate Jack Wedemeier. Flaherty then completed the hat-trick with a goal at 77:43 after receiving a pass from Abe Dirnberger.

Mike Colombo faced no shots on goal in recording the shutout as the Hawks defense limited Upper Iowa to just four shots in the game.

All four of Quincy's goals and 11 of the 12 points were recorded by freshmen.

Quincy is 1-0 on the season and will face Tiffin University tomorrow night in the second night of Soccer Bowl XIV. The Hawks have a chance to win just their third ever Soccer Bowl championship, game time is set for 8 p.m.
