The Peacocks hosted the Panthers of York College and the Marauders of the University of Mary in two matches this past weekend. Upper Iowa lost both matches 2-1, but played very well at times as a team and received some good defense from the back line and goaltending from freshman Andy Youde. The losses dropped UIU's record to 3-10 overall. On Saturday, the Peacocks were out shot by the Panthers 32-11. York was only able to convert on two of their twelve shots thrown at Youde, while Upper Iowa made good on one of their six shots on frame. The Panthers opened the scoring in the 37th minute as the York striker got out on a break away and went one on one with the Peacock keeper. The visitor's second goal came in the 51st minute as a Panther shot found the lower left corner of the frame past Youde. Upper Iowa did not give up and continued to look for offense. Aaron Hoyne took an unexpected shot from 25 yards out on the right side that rocketed past the Panther keeper and gave the home fans some hope of a rally. Craig Signorin made the pass to Hoyne in the 78th minute to close the gap, but another goal was not to be. On Sunday, the Peacocks and Marauders played a very physical game and neither team got on the scoreboard in the first half. UIU put the first mark in the scoring column as Alex Hess came up from his defensive position to head home a corner kick off the foot of Corey Lange. Upper Iowa held the lead for the next eleven minutes until a foul in the box gave U-Mary a penalty kick. The Marauders took advantage of the opportunity and tied the game at 1-1 when the ball flew past a diving Youde. U-Mary scored the game's final goal in the 78th minute after an 8-yard finish to the lower right corner of the goal. The Peacocks take to the road this week with games at Viterbo on Wednesday, Oct. 3, and at the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday, Oct. 6. |
