The Peacock men's soccer team was victorious in their home opener today as they defeated the Mustangs of Mount Mercy 4-0 in a physical battle at Pattison Field. The Peacocks dominated the first half as they took a 3-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Upper Iowa outshot Mount Mercy 26-8 for the game and converted four of those shots for scores to pick up the 4-0 win and improve their record to 2-1-0. Derek Oelmann opened the scoring early with a goal in the second minute of the game. Craig Signorin assisted on Oelmann's 8-yard finish. Signorin then scored Upper Iowa's second goal of the match in the eighth minute when he sent a rocket past the goalie and just inside the frame for his second goal of the year. Jacob Rasbeck assisted on Signorin's strike. Bo Miller scored Upper Iowa's third goal of the first half in the 26th minute. After the ball was deflected, Josh Andersen used a header to center the ball and Miller put it in the net with a header of his own to stake UIU to a 3-0 lead. Shane Elbert added the final Peacock tally in the 83rd minute as he scored on a breakaway that was initiated by Corey Lange to close the door on Mount Mercy and give Upper Iowa the 4-0 win. Andy Youde was not tested often but came up with a few saves (4) to earn his first shutout of the 2008 season. Upper Iowa (2-1) will head back out on the road this weekend as they travel to Wartburg and UW-Parkside. The Peacocks will face the Knights on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m, and then take the field against the Rangers on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 12:00 p.m. |
