14th Annual Peacock Golf Classic - June 5, 2009
 
The Athletics Department at Upper Iowa University is hosting their 14th Annual Peacock Golf Classic on Friday, June 5 at Big Rock Country Club in Fayette, Iowa. All the Peacock coaches and administration, including our new Director of Athletics, Dave Miller, will be at Big Rock early and on the course all day to visit with the UIU alumni and friends in attendance.

The activities on the 5th will begin at 9 a.m. with registration. Teams will be on the course at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start followed by dinner, prizes and awards at the conclusion of play. Participants in the four-person scramble will enjoy free range balls, raffle prizes, flight trophies, a lunch, and beverages on the course, as well as hole contests including closest to the pin, men's and women's long drive, and longest putt. A hole-in-one on hole #9 will also earn that lucky participant $10,000. Many more games and challenges are also planned for many of the holes on the course. (MORE)

Twenty-Five Peacocks Earn Northern Sun All-Academic Team Honors
 
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced its All-Academic Teams for the 2009 spring athletic season and twenty-five Peacock student-athletes earned recognition. To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student-athlete must have also reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution represented with one full year completed at their institution. (MORE)

Upper Iowa Finishes Eighth at NCAA Central/West Regional
Lincoln, Neb.--The Peacock men's golf team completed their play in the NCAA Division II Central/West Regional at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. After posting back-to-back 303's, the Peacocks entered the final round in a tie for ninth place. Upper Iowa saved their best for last as they turned in a 297 over the final eighteen holes to move up to eighth place.

Upper Iowa placed second among the ten Central Region teams after entering the weekend as the #8 seed in the region and the #17 seed overall at the tournament. The Peacocks found themselves just 15 strokes away from a ticket to the NCAA Championships. Grand Canyon University, who opened the final day tied with UIU, shot a 282 to claim fifth place and the final invitation to the NCAA Championships. (MORE)

Upper Iowa Tied for Ninth thru Second Round at NCAA Central/West Regional
Lincoln, Neb.--The Peacock men's golf team continued their play in the NCAA Division II Central/West Regional today at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.. The Peacocks shot a 303 on day two, the same score they posted on day one, and still sit in a tie for ninth place in the team standings after the first two rounds. UIU is tied with Grand Canyon University; but has posted the lowest scores among the four NSIC schools at the regional.

Adam Winans led the Peacocks again on day two with a second straight 74 (+3) and has now moved up to a tie for 19th place. Matt Dahlke bounced back from a 77 on day one to shoot a 75 on day two, while Josh Wells carded a 78 in the second round. Bryan Peck turned in a 76 for his work on the course and Jon Anderson shot an 84. (MORE)

Peacocks Tied for Ninth after First Round at NCAA Central/West Regional
Lincoln, Neb.--The Peacock men's golf team opened play in the NCAA Division II Central/West Regional today at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb.. The Peacocks shot a 303 and sit in a tie for ninth place in the team standings after the first round. UIU is tied with Western New Mexico. Adam Winans led the Peacocks with a 74 (+3) to tie for 20th, while Josh Wells tied for 31st just a stroke behind at 75 (+4). Jon Anderson and Matt Dahlke both carded 77's to tie for 53rd, while Bryan Peck tied for 86th with an 80. (MORE)

Peacock Men's Golf Earns Post Season Berth
The men's golf team at Upper Iowa University has been invited to compete at the NCAA Regionals early next week. This marks the second straight year that the men's team has been invited to post-season play. The men are the #8 seed at the NCAA Central/West Regional in Lincoln, Neb. For senior Josh Wells, this will be the fourth time he has competed at an NCAA regional, while Adam Winans, Matt Dahlke, and Tucker Bayler will all make their second appearance.

The men's regional will take place next Monday-Wednesday as well and will be played at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln. The Peacocks are one of twenty teams at the Central/West Regional; ten teams and four individuals were invited from each regional to create the field of 108 golfers. Once play begins on Monday, all twenty teams will be competing for one of five team berths regardless of which region they are from. In addition to the five teams, two individuals not on those teams will earn spots at the NCAA Championships. (MORE)

Winans Named Northern Sun Conference Men's Golfer of the Week
Adam Winans, a senior from Lagrange, Indiana, has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Men's Golfer of the Week after earning medalist honors at the RMAC Championship. This honor is the sixteenth NSIC Player of the Week award earned by an Upper Iowa student-athlete this year and the second time this spring that a men's golfer has been recognized.

Winans earned medalist honors at the RMAC Championships after shooting an even par 216 (70-70-76) over three rounds at the Sundance Golf Club in Buckeye, Arizona. Winans led a field of 75 golfers and finished two strokes ahead of the runner up from Regis Univeristy. The Peacock senior entered the final round today at -4 over the first 36-holes. The Peacock senior also led the field in par 3 scoring with a 2.75 average and tied for 2nd in par 4 scoring with a 4.13 average; he ran home the most birdies (13) of anyone on the course. (MORE)

Peacocks Finish Third at RMAC Championships
The Peacock men's golf team wrapped up their regular season with a third place finish at the RMAC Championships on Monday and Tuesday in Buckeye, Arizona at the Sundance Golf Club. Upper Iowa finished 15 strokes behind team champion, the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, and 14 strokes behind the runner up, Western New Mexico University. The Peacocks finished the 54-hole tournament with a 915 (303-299-313); the team was led by the tournament's medalist, Adam Winans, who shot even par over the three rounds. The field of fifteen teams included seven NSIC schools and eight RMAC schools. (MORE)

Peacock Men's Golf Program Receives Four Commitments
Head Coach Chad Markuson and the Upper Iowa Men's golf program are excited to announce the commitments of four additions to the program for the 2009-2010 academic year. Future Peacocks, Jake Nelson, Joe Lownik, Sam Schmalz, and Colin Weaver will all compete for the golf program this fall. (MORE)
