Josh Wells fired a 1-over 73 to sit in fifth place at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Central Regional after the first round Monday. Winona State's Troy Merritt leads after shooting a 5-under 67.
Starting his round on the back nine, Wells bogeyed the par-3 13th hole to go 1-over par. He moved to even par with a birdie at the par-3 third hole. Back-to-back bogeys at five and six moved him 2-over. Wells closed with a birdie on the par-5 eighth hole. Teammate Craig Signorin struggled Monday. He opened with an 87. The three-round tournament at Prairie Bluff Golf Club in Lockport, Ill., continues Tuesday at 8 a.m. The third and final round will begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
