The men's golf team of Upper Iowa traveled to Salpulpa, Oklahoma just outside of Tulsa to compete in the NSU Men's Classic. The tournament, hosted by Northeastern State University, is a varitable who's who of Division II college golf. The leaderboard after 36-holes featured 14 golfers at +2 or better. The medalist, Matt Salome from Washburn, turned in a -9 (133) and was one of seven golfers that shot par or better. The tournament originally scheduled for 54 holes was cut short due to lightning in the middle of round 3. The Peacocks sat in 5th place after the first 18- holes with a new low round school record. The team carded a 291 fueled by Adam Winans' 68 (-3), Josh Wells' 73 (+2), Andy Thomas's 74 (+3), and Matt Dahlke's 76 (+5). Bryan Peck was not far off the pace as he shot 81 in round one. After a short turn through the clubhouse, the golfers were back on the course. The Peacocks were unable to keep up their record setting pace in the second round. Wells was the lone Peacock to improve his round one score as he turned in a one-over-par 72. Upper Iowa fell to 10th place in the 15 team field as they recorded a 303 in the second round for a 594 total. Winans finished the tournament in a tie for 12th place at 144 (68-76/ +2), Wells registered a 145 (73-72/+3) to tie for 15th place. Thomas came in with a 150 (74-72/+8), Dahlke turned in a 155 (76-79/+13), and Peck carded a 173 (81-92/+31). The entire men's and women's golf programs are traveling to Winona, Minnesota to compete in the tournament hosted by Winona State University on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The competition will be the final play before the men's NSIC Tournament (36-hole event). The first half of the women's NSIC Tournament (72-hole event) on Oct. 6th and 7th. |
