Peacocks Tab Notre Dame Coach as New Defensive Line Coach Loney spent the past two years at Notre Dame working within the offensive staff under head coach Charlie Weis. Prior to his time in South Bend, he was the Defensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator at Bethany College in West Virginia. Loney spent three seasons at Wesleyan University in Connecticut as the Defensive Line Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. The new Peacock coach got his start at the high school level in 1995 during his summer breaks from college. (MORE)
14th Annual Peacock Golf Classic - June 5, 2009 The activities on the 5th will begin at 9 a.m. with registration. Teams will be on the course at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start followed by dinner, prizes and awards at the conclusion of play. Participants in the four-person scramble will enjoy free range balls, raffle prizes, flight trophies, a lunch, and beverages on the course, as well as hole contests including closest to the pin, men's and women's long drive, and longest putt. A hole-in-one on hole #9 will also earn that lucky participant $10,000. Many more games and challenges are also planned for many of the holes on the course. (MORE)
Upper Iowa Commitments Reach Thirty-Seven Upper Iowa University Head Football Coach Tom Shea has received commitments from thirty-seven student-athletes to attend Upper Iowa and compete for the 2009 Peacock football team. The group of thirty-seven includes three that started classes at Upper Iowa in January, thirteen that signed National Letters of Intent, nineteen student-athletes that have signed acceptance letters to Upper Iowa University and two that have signed an athletic scholarship agreement. Upper Iowa is a member of NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Peacocks are coming off their third season in the Northern Sun Conference finishing with an NSIC mark of 2-8 and compiling a 2-9 record overall. After beginning the season as the #14 pick in the NSIC Coaches' Preseason Poll, Upper Iowa finished in a tie for 11th place with MSU Moorhead in the conference. The Peacocks will return one NSIC All-Conference performer from the 2008 campaign in the form of offensive guard Ervin Kehoss (Honorable Mention). Upper Iowa will also see the bulk of their offense return from last season including quarterback Ben Curran, leading rusher Sam Epsteen, top pass catcher La'Mont Williams and the majority of the offensive line. The Peacocks will need to replace three-time All-NSIC performer Jerad Jandrain, who will graduate this spring, at offensive tackle. On defense, the team will have leaders Nate Curran, Craig Henry, Shane McComb, Vernard Wilkins and Dominique Jackson back for next season. (MORE) Dan Hernandez to Represent the Blue and White Upper Iowa senior defensive tackle, Dan Hernandez, has been recognized numerous times for his achievements during his playing career for the Peacocks, including All- Academic and 3-time Northern Sun All-Academic honors. On April 20th, Hernandez earned yet another honor for his accomplishments -- an invitation to the 2009 Florida Sr. Collegiate All-Star Bowl in Tampa, Florida. (MORE) Peacocks Wrap Spring Practice with Blue & White Scrimmage The Upper Iowa football team concluded their spring practices on Saturday afternoon with their annual Blue & White scrimmage. The Blue team trailed 10-2 as the game wound down, but found the endzone with six seconds to play and then converted on a two-point play to tie the contest at 10-10. "We had two goals for the scrimmage today," said Head Football Coach Tom Shea. "The first goal was to be competitive and the second was to have some fun. I think we saw many good things, but we know we have a lot to work on yet." The Peacock football team will open their 2009 season at Lincoln University on Aug. 28. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. under the lights in Jefferson City, Missouri. (MORE) Upper Iowa Football to Wrap Off-Season Practice with Blue & White Spring Game The Peacock football team held its final spring practice Friday, April 17, one day before the Blue & White Spring Game. Saturday's spring game will be open to the public with parking and admission free of charge. The game will be held at Eischeid Stadium in Fayette and will kick off at 2:00 p.m. The game will feature a battle between a new Peacock offensive and defensive scheme. After the arrival of offensive coordinator Brian Frana and the promotion of Eric Mattson to defensive coordinator, the Peacocks will look to show different styles of play on both sides of the ball. The game will consist of four 20-minute quarters with a running clock. The Peacocks have thirty-five commitments for the 2009 season. (MORE) Peacock Football Holds Third Spring Practice The Coach Shea era has begun as the Peacock football team is in full swing this spring season. The Upper Iowa University football team got outside for the first time this spring on Monday, Mar. 30, with a two-hour afternoon session on the practice fields. Going into the third spring practice the players were in helmets and shoulder pads under the direction of head coach Tom Shea, who is in his first year at the helm of the Peacocks. (MORE) Upper Iowa University Names David Miller as Director of Athletics Upper Iowa University President Dr. Alan Walker announced today that David Miller will be the new Director of Athletics. Miller will begin his duties on Monday, May 18. Miller, a Manning, Iowa native spent the last two years as the Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, an NCAA Division II institution with Division I men's ice hockey. (MORE) Upper Iowa Athletics Department Honors 149 Student-Athletes The Athletics Department of Upper Iowa University recognized 149 student-athletes who earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll between games of the Winona State-Upper Iowa basketball doubleheader last Wednesday night. The honored group includes student-athletes, team managers, student assistant coaches, and student athletic trainers. To earn consideration for the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a minimum 3.00 grade-point average during the fall 2008 semester and/or achieved a cumulative 3.00 GPA or better. Each student received a certificate for his/her achievement from Kent McElvania, Interm Director of Athletics, and an array of Upper Iowa's faculty. (MORE) |
