Football Team Signs Twenty-Six for 2010
 
Fayette, Iowa (Feb. 3, 2010) - The Upper Iowa University football team and coaching staff led by Head Coach Tom Shea announced its class of recruits for the 2010 season today. The class includes committments from twenty-six student-athletes to attend Upper Iowa and compete for the 2010 Peacock football team. The group of twenty-six includes seventeen that signed National Letters of Intent and nine student-athletes that have signed acceptance letters to Upper Iowa University.

Included in this class of recruits are six defensive backs, five wide receivers, four offensive linemen, three defensive ends, two running backs, two quarterbacks, two linebackers, one H-back, and one athlete.

Thirteen of the signees are from Iowa, while nine more hail from two neighboring states; six from Illinois and three from Wisconsin. The final four signees are from California (3) and Colorado (1). (MORE)

Sixteen Peacocks Named to 2009 Fall NSIC All-Academic Team
 
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced its All-Academic Teams for the 2009 fall athletic season and sixteen Peacock student-athletes earned recognition.

To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student-athlete must have also reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution represented with one full year completed at their institution. (MORE)

Curran Earns Super Region #3 First Team Honors
Upper Iowa junior safety Nate Curran has been named to the Daktronics Super Region #3 Defensive First Team following the release of the Daktronics All-Region teams this afternoon.

Curran led the Peacock defense in tackles with 92 which included 55 solo tackles and 5 tackles for loss (22 yards). The 92 tackles ties him for 75th in the nation among defensive players at 8.18 per game. When playing against the pass, Curran led UIU with 4 interceptions which he returned for 47 yards and one touchdown. In two years, the young man from Cedar Falls, Iowa has recorded 153 tackles and snagged 6 interceptions. Curran was also named to the All-NSIC South Division First Team earlier this month. (MORE)

Three Peacocks Earn NSIC All-Conference Honors
The Northern Sun Conference has handed out their Football All-Conference Awards and three Peacocks have earned the honor. Nate Curran (JR / Cedar Falls, Iowa) was named to the First Team Defense of the South Division as a Defensive Back, while his brother Ben Curran (JR / Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Jessie Hubbard (SO / West Palm Beach, Florida) were named to the Honorable Mention Team for the South Division as a quarterback and wide receiver respectively.

Nate Curran earned his All-NSIC South Division First Team honor thanks to his hard hitting ways in the Peacock secondary. Curran used quite a bit in run support led the Peacock defense in tackles with 92 which included 55 solo tackles and 5 tackles for loss (22 yards). Peacocks Close 2009 Season with Victory over Golden Eagles
The Upper Iowa football team closed their 2009 season in Crookston, Minnesota with a come-from-behind victory for the second straight year. The Peacocks scored 29 second half points to recover from an early ten-point deficit and finish the season 3-8, a one-game improvement over a season ago. UIU won the game 39-33 as they held on throughout a wild fourth quarter that saw the teams combine for 41 points including five touchdowns in the final seven minutes. The Peacocks complete their 2009 season tied for 11th place in the Northern Sun Conference. (MORE)

Four Peacock Teams in Action Today
Four Peacock programs will be in action today.

The wrestling team is opening their season at the Kaye Young Open in Mason City, Iowa. The football team plays at 1 p.m. in Crookston, Minnesota. The volleyball team plays at 4 p.m. at home against Northern State. The men's basketball team will play at Drake this evening at 7:05 p.m.

#4 Mavericks Put Damper on Peacock Senior Day
The Upper Iowa football team took the field at Eb Eischeid Stadium for the final time in 2009 today. The Peacocks welcomed the #4 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato on Senior Day in Fayette. UIU honored their senior players and team managers prior to kickoff. Minnesota State came into the game with a perfect 9-0 record and the #1 ranking in the most recent NCAA Super Regional 3 poll. The Mavericks used a 30-point second quarter to separate themselves from the Peacocks and cruised to a 48-17 NSIC victory. With the win, MSU improves to 10-0 on the season and 9-0 in the NSIC, while UIU falls to 2-8 and 1-8 in conference games. (MORE)

Peacocks to Host #4 Mavericks in Final Home Game of 2009
The Upper Iowa football team will host the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato in a Northern Sun Conference South Division match up tomorrow afternoon in Fayette. The Mavericks come in as the #4 team in the nation and the #1 team in the NCAA's most recent Super Regional Poll 3. The Peacocks enter the game with a 2-7 record overall and a 1-7 mark in the NSIC, while MSU is 9-0 overall and 8-0 in conference games.

The forecast for Saturday looks like it will cooperate and give both teams fair conditions for a late October game in the northern midwest. Temperatures will be in the 40's by game time with a prediction for mostly sunny skies, although a 15-25 mph wind is expected.

The home game for Upper Iowa is their fifth of the season and final home game of 2009 at Eb Eischeid Stadium. Upper Iowa will honor their seniors prior to the game. Next week, the Peacocks will travel to the University of Minnesota, Crookston to face the Golden Eagles for the season finale at 1 p.m. (MORE)

Fourth Quarter Peacock Rally Falls Short in Overtime
The Upper Iowa Peacock football team dropped a heartbreaking contest Saturday afternoon as the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul visited Eb Eischeid Stadium in Fayette. The Peacocks posted 22 points in the fourth quarter of action to send the game into overtime, but couldn't complete the comeback, losing 57-56 in double overtime on a perfect autumn day in Northeast Iowa. Following a punt on the opening drive of the contest, Peacock defensive back Nate Curran picked off the first pass from Golden Bear quarterback, Mitch Brecke to give Upper Iowa great field position to start their second drive of the afternoon. Then just seven plays later, Mike Moser rushed into the end zone from 10 yards out to give the Peacocks an early 7-0 lead. Concordia-St. Paul came right back on the very next play after the kickoff return as Brecke connected with Calvin Simon for a 56 yard touchdown. However, the Golden Bears would not convert the extra point and Upper Iowa would hold the lead, 7-6, with over 10 minutes to play in the first quarter. (MORE)
