Peacock Rally Falls Short Versus Mavericks

On Saturday afternoon Upper Iowa played host to Minnesota State, Mankato. The young Peacock lineup, which features six freshmen, found themselves in a large hole at halftime. But the home team fought hard in the second half and outscored the Mavericks by four. The future NSIC foe held on to withstand the Peacock rally and won the game 93-78.

Minnesota State shot 54% in the first half while hitting five threes. The Mavericks made their mark at the charity stripe where they shot a perfect 17-17. Upper Iowa shot 41% from the field but did not hit a three (0-2). The Peacocks were out rebounded 19-10 in the first 20 minutes. The Mavericks went to the locker room with a 49-29 lead at halftime.

Upper Iowa improved their intensity and execution to pull the home team back within 13 points, 57-44, with 15:12 left to play. Chandler Adams provided a second half spark with 11 points. However, Minnesota State continued to shoot well and extended their lead to 73-51 at the eleven minute mark. Both sides played extremely physical and battled for every loose ball. Jadee Jones dropped in 12 second half points. He was one of five Mavericks to finish in double-figures. MSU continued to fuel their offense at the foul line hitting 30 of 33 attempts in the game. The halftime hole proved to be too much for the Peacocks to overcome as they took the loss, 93-78.

Matt Lesan led the Peacocks with 21 points. Chandler Adams and Dan Bestul netted 13 and 11, respectively. Alex Kramer pulled down 6 boards, while Chris Sullivan and Lesan each grabbed 4 rebounds. Adams dished out 8 assists, while Alex Kramer had 4. Lesan and Jude Roybal handed out 3 assists.

Upper Iowa will travel to Cedar Rapids for the Mercy Sports Care Holiday Hoops Challenge next Saturday, Dec. 22. The Peacocks will face the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota at the U.S. Cellular Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
