Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Officially Expands to 14 Teams

St. Paul, Minn. - Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Commissioner Butch Raymond has announced the results from the NSIC Board of Directors teleconference call dealing with expansion. The Board of Directors, consisting of the ten NSIC Presidents/Chancellors, voted to expand the NSIC to 14 teams with the addition of Augustana College (Sioux Falls, S.D.), the University of Minnesota Duluth (Duluth, Minn.), Minnesota State University Mankato (Mankato, Minn.) and Saint Cloud State University (Saint Cloud, Minn.). These four institutions, which were all voted on individually, will begin participating within the NSIC in the 2008-09 season.

Upper Iowa Finishes Sixth in 2007-08 NSIC All-Sport Standings

The Upper Iowa Athletics Department climbed three spots this year in the NSIC All-Sports Standings. The Peacocks ranked 6th this year, only five points away from 4th place U-Mary and four and a half points away from 5th place MSU Moorhead. Upper Iowa's success is due, in large part, to its three NSIC Championships in Wrestling, Women's Tennis, and Women's Golf. But 6th place could not have been attained without Baseball (2nd), Women's Soccer (3rd), and Men's Golf (3rd), who all had very successful seasons as well.

Upper Iowa University Head Men's Basketball Coach Brian Dolan announced today that Mark Lafrenz, a highly sought-after recruit from Bennett, Iowa, has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and basketball career at Upper Iowa University. Mark will join fall signees Austin Emerson and Lee Parker on next year's Peacock roster.

Ten Peacocks Earn Northern Sun All-Academic Team Honors

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has announced its All-Academic Teams for the 2007-08 winter athletic season and ten Peacock student-athletes earned recognition.

To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student-athlete must have also reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution represented with one full year completed at their institution.

Upper Iowa Defeated in Northern Sun Conference Tournament Quarters

The Peacock men's basketball team traveled to Marshall, Minnesota to face the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University in the quarterfinals of the Northern Sun Conference Tournament. Upper Iowa entered the game as the sixth seed, while Southwest came in with the third seed. The two teams split the season series as each team won on its home court. The Peacocks shot the ball well in the first half, but 10 turnovers cost the visitors as they went to the break trailing 39-25. Upper Iowa attempted a rally in the second half, but were never able to get closer than nine points. In the end, the Peacocks season came to a close with a 76-63 defeat to the Mustangs.

Lesan and Roybal Earn NSIC Conference Honors

The Northern Sun Conference has handed out their Men's Basketball Conference Awards; Matt Lesan (FR/ Solon, Iowa) was named Co-Newcomer of the Year and Jude Roybal (SR/ Albuquerque, N.M.) was named to the All-Conference Third Team.

"I am proud of both Matt and Jude. They would be the first to tell anyone that without their teammates they could not have earned these honors. Both of these guys deserve the recognition for their hard work this year," said Coach Brian Dolan.

Peacocks Claim 6th Seed in NSIC Tournament

The Peacock men's basketball team claimed the #6 seed in the NSIC Tournament with a win at Bemidji State last night, 64-50.

Upper Iowa will now face the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State, whom the Peacocks split with in the regular season, on Saturday, Mar. 1. Tip off for the first round tournament game is 7:00 p.m in Marshall, Minnesota.

Peacocks Hold On For Overtime NSIC Victory at UM, Crookston

The Peacocks men's basketball team traveled to Crookston, Minnesota for the first game of the team's final regular season road weekend. Upper Iowa took the floor looking to move up in the conference standings and avoid a first round match up with one of the two national powers at the top of the NSIC. The Peacocks took a 46-40 lead at halftime thanks to 56% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles shot 62% in the half but had two fewer three-point baskets. In the second half, the home team was able to whittle their way back to a tie with 48 seconds to play and sent the game to overtime with the second tie of the half, 77-77, with 3 seconds to play. Upper Iowa took control of the overtime period thanks to eight points from the hand of Jude Roybal. Roybal's pair of three-pointers gave UIU a six point lead that the visitors would not give up on their way to the 91-83 victory.

Peacocks Slay Dragons in NSIC Affair

The Upper Iowa men's basketball team played host to the MSU Moorhead Dragons on Friday night in a game that matched the 5th and 7th place teams in the Northern Sun. The two teams played through a physical first half much like the first half of the game played in Moorhead, Minnesota one month ago. UIU held a slim three point lead at halftime. The Peacocks, led by A.J. Adkins, played very well in the second half and outscored the Dragons by five to take the victory 64-56.

Upper Iowa Drops Heartbreaker to Wayne State

The UIU men's basketball team played at Wayne State on Saturday night in their last regular season meeting with the NSIC foe. Upper Iowa took a 40-27 lead into the locker room at halftime, but the Wildcats stormed back over the final ten minutes of the game to erase a thirteen point deficit. The Peacocks took a one-point lead with a three-pointer with 28 seconds to play, but a Wildcat putback with 7 seconds remaining gave Wayne State the victory as Upper Iowa was unable to get a final shot off. The Wildcats improved to 9-6 in league play and 14-10 overall, while Upper Iowa slipped to 6-17 overall and 5-9 in the NSIC.

Mustangs Defeat Peacocks in NSIC Rematch

The Peacock men's basketball team traveled to Southwest Minnesota State for their latest NSIC game. The first time these two teams met, the Peacocks shocked the Mustangs and upset them in Dorman Gym. SMSU took a twelve point lead at halftime thanks to 70% shooting from the field. The Peacocks rallied quickly in the second half pulling within three, but the visitors couldn't complete the comeback as they fell 88-76.

Upper Iowa Athletics Department Honors 169 Student-Athletes

The Athletics Department of Upper Iowa University recognized 169 student-athletes who earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll between games of the Winona State-Upper Iowa basketball doubleheader Saturday night. The honored group includes student-athletes, team managers, student assistant coaches, and student athletic trainers. This year's 169 honorees are a new record for total student-athletes honored at Upper Iowa.

#3 Warriors Narrowly Escape Peacocks in NSIC Battle

The Peacock men's basketball team played host to the #3 team in the country tonight. Upper Iowa welcomed national powerhouse Winona State to Dorman Gym for a Northern Sun Conference tilt. The home team is playing their fifth straight game in Fayette and has posted a 3-1 record in the previous four home affairs. The Warriors used an early run to take a 21-8 advantage, but the Peacocks hung tough thanks to physical play and good rebounding as the teams went to the break with Upper Iowa trailing 37-33. The Peacocks kept up the pressure and tuned in their offense to lead for much of the second half, but a late rally by the visitors gave the Warriors the 72-62 victory.
