Upper Iowa Head Baseball Coach Mark Danker announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2007-08 season. The newly-signed Peacocks are Mitch McClay (Carterville, Illinois) and Marcus Thompson (Runnells, Iowa).
Mitch McClay McClay currently attends Carterville High School in Carterville, Illinois. The outfielder was a three year varsity letter winner and earned a spot in the 2006 Southern Illinois Junior All-Star Game. The Carterville prep is hitting .373 with 8 doubles, 2 homeruns, and 28 runs batted in. He also has a 1-1 record, 2 saves and a 1.39 earned run average in his limited time on the mound. McClay is listed on the high honor roll with a 4.8 GPA (5.0 scale) and is a member of the BETA club. The senior outfielder was also named in the “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” list. Mitch is the son of Mike and Dawn McClay and will major in Business Management at UIU. Marcus Thompson Thompson currently attends Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Runnels native graduated from Southeast Polk High School where he was an All-Conference performer. Thompson hit .357 with 14 doubles, 5 triples, 4 homeruns, and 38 runs batted in during his first year at Kirkwood. His sophomore campaign was even better registering a .374 average while collecting 14 doubles, 3 triples, 5 homeruns, and 48 runs batted in under Kirkwood’s longtime coach, John Lewis. Thompson was named to the 1st Team All-Region and All-District in his first year at Kirkwood and was named to the 2nd Team All-Region following this season. The transfer also earned 2nd Team Academic All-Region honors for his work in the classroom. Marcus is the son of Pat and Marci Thompson and will major in Business Administration at UIU. |
