The Northern Sun Conference has named their Baseball All-Conference Teams and six Peacocks have earned the honor. Brian Putnam (Dubuque, Iowa), Ronnie Sweeney (Kitchener, Ontario), and Mitch Walser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) were all named to the NSIC All-Conference First Team. Dan Berg (Watkins, Minnesota), Nate Mendoza (Lompoc, California), and Jamie Terres (Melrose, Minnesota) were all named to the NSIC All-Conference Second Team.
Putnam earned first team honors as a pitcher finishing the season with a 4-2 record and an ERA of 1.93. The junior right hander made 21 appearances for the Peacocks while earning 3 saves. He only allowed opponents 7 earned runs in his 32.2 innings while striking out 16 and holding opposing batters to a .209 average. Sweeney earned first team honors as a pitcher finishing the season with a 7-2 record and a 4.93 ERA. The sophomore fire baler started 5 of the 12 games he appeared in recording 2 complete games. Sweeney led the team in strikeouts with 48 while walking only 18 and holding opponents to a .243 average in his 45.2 innings. Walser hit .427 (73-171) with 15 doubles, a pair of triples, and 11 homeruns to earn first team honors as an outfielder. The senior right fielder drove in 64 runs while scoring 53 and registering a .731 slugging percentage and a .505 on base percentage. Walser also stole 11 of 11 bases. The Cedar Rapids native led the team in several categories including batting average, runs, total hits, doubles, triples, homeruns, rbi’s, slugging percentage and on base percentage while playing in and starting all 50 games for the Peacocks this season. Berg earned second team honors as he hit .363 (69-190) with 11 doubles, a triple, and 5 homeruns. The senior center fielder drove in 31 runs while scoring 50 and registering a .511 slugging percentage and a .453 on base percentage. Berg also stole 13 of 17 bases. The Watkins native led the team in at bats while playing in and starting all 50 games for Upper Iowa this season. Mendoza earned his second team spot by hitting .316 (48-152) with 8 doubles, a triple, and 5 homeruns. The senior third basemen drove in 42 runs while scoring 48 and recording a .480 slugging percentage and a .456 on base percentage. Mendoza stole eight bases this season in nine attempts. The Lompoc native led the team in walks with 32 while playing in and starting all 50 games for the Peacocks. Terres was named to the second team thanks to his .331 average (58-175) which included 13 doubles, a triple, and a homerun. The senior second basemen drove in 32 runs while scoring 44 and recording a .434 slugging percentage and a .395 on base percentage. Terres stole 7 of 10 bases. The Melrose native led the team in sacrifice flies and was third in fielding assists while playing and starting all 50 games for UIU. The Peacocks finished the season with a 29-21 record overall and an 18-11 mark, good for fifth place, in their inaugural season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Upper Iowa finished the Northern Sun Conference regular season with the second most wins trailing only conference leader Wayne State. |
