Entering today’s NSIC double header, the Peacocks and Golden Bears were both looking to earn a bid into the Northern Sun Conference tournament. Upper Iowa must win two games while Concordia must win three in order to qualify for the tournament. The two teams split the first day’s double header as UIU picked up a 7-6 win in eight innings, while CU won game two 14-7.
In game one the Peacocks started off slow but rallied back in the fifth with five runs off four hits to take the lead 6-5. Ryan Arp led-off the inning with a stand-up double and the Peacocks were rolling. T.J. Johnson also contributed to the charge with double down the leftfield line while driving in two. Concordia answered with a run in the seventh to tie the game and forced the game into extra innings. Brian Putnam held the Golden Bears scoreless in the top of the eighth. The Peacocks loaded the bases on three walks, two of which were intentional. Johnson hit the game winning single into right centerfield as Nick Fjelland scored the winning run. Game two looked to be a pitcher’s dual in the early innings, but the two teams combined for twenty runs after the third inning. The Peacocks got on the board first with a Fjelland home run in the bottom of the first, but couldn’t find home plate again until the fourth. The Golden Bears took charge in the top of the fourth with an 11 run outburst that turned out to be more then enough. Five of the eleven runs were unearned by Concordia, as the Peacocks committed three errors. Upper Iowa managed to scrape together six runs over the final few innings, but fell short 14-7. These two teams will resume action tomorrow with another pair of games beginning at 12 p.m. Upper Iowa needs to come away with at least one win to ensure their first bid into the Northern Sun Conference Tournament. |
