The Upper Iowa baseball team traveled to Winona, Minnesota for a Northern Sun Conference double header this afternoon. The Peacocks and Warriors split the two games today as Winona won game one 3-2 and Upper Iowa took game two 5-1. The split brings Upper Iowa's overall record to 24-13 and 14-5 in the NSIC, while Winona's record is now 21-10 and 14-2 in the NSIC.
The Peacocks scored a run in the first as senior centerfielder, Dan Berg, led the game off with a homerun to left field. Winona State tied the game in the bottom of the third as they scored a run on two hits off Peacock starter Zach Raff. UIU was able to retake the lead 2-1 in the fifth inning when Winona State committed two errors on back-to-back plays and allowed Jamie Terres to score for the visitors. The game moved to the bottom of the seventh with Upper Iowa still holding onto the 2-1 lead. Raff was pitching well on the mound and got the first two out s of the inning on an infield pop up and a strike out. The Peacocks needed one more out for the win, but it would never come. With two outs, the Warriors put runners on first and second thanks to a hit batsmen and a walk. Brett Maxwell stepped to the plate and delivered a double of the right center field wall that scored both runner and gave the Warriors the come from behind victory. Winona State spoiled another great pitching performance by Zach Raff, who took the loss. Raff allowed only six hits over 6.2 innings allowing 3 runs while striking out 7. In game two, the Peacocks scored early and often. Upper Iowa scored one in the first inning thanks to a Terres double that drove Berg across the plate. The Peacocks struck for two more in the second inning with two outs after three straight hits. Erik Sorensen got things started with a single through the right side and moved to second on a single by Ryan Arp that found a hole on the left side. Both Peacocks were driven in as Berg double to left center field. Upper Iowa extended the lead to 4-0 in the third when Bob Olson walked with the bases loaded and pushed Terres, who led the inning off with a double, across the plate. UIU tacked one last run on in the fifth when Mitch Walser crossed the plate thanks to an error on a ball off the bat of T.J. Johnson. Winona State finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a run on two hits. Lucas Wilsing, a freshman from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, was dominant on the mound for the Peacocks. He gave up one run while scattering seven hits through seven innings to pick up the complete game win. Wilsing is now 5-0 in his last five starts including wins over Wayne State, Northern State, UM-Crookston, Southwest Minnesota State, and now... Winona State. The lefthander also picked up his third straight complete game win. In his last three starts, Wilsing has allowed 3 runs, only 2 earned, on 17 hits while walking nine and striking out 17 in 21 innings of work. At the plate, the Peacocks were led by Berg (2-7, 3 rbi, 2 runs), Terres (2-7, 2 runs, 1 rbi), Walser (3-7, 1 run), and Sorensen (3-5, 1 run). The Peacocks and Warriors will take the field again tomorrow for another NSIC double header beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Winona, Minnesota. |
