Peacocks Sweep Double Header with Bulldogs




The Upper Iowa baseball team swept a double header against future NSIC team, UM-Duluth. The Peacocks defeated the Bulldogs 11-4 in game one and 15-5 in game two. With the two victories, UIU’s record improves to 22-11 overall.
 
UIU scored a run in the first inning of game one, but trailed 3-1 going into the top of the fifth inning. The Peacocks scored four runs in the fifth highlighted by a single off the bat of Nate Mendoza that plated two Peacocks. Upper Iowa added another six run in the sixth inning. Jamie Terres drove two runs in with a single before a hit batsmen and a walk forced two more runs across the plate. Marshall Rogne (2-0) picked up the win for the Peacocks. Rogne threw five innings scattering six hits and allowing four runs, three earned, while striking out seven. Justin Manson came on to pitch two innings of scoreless relief.
 
In game two, Upper Iowa jumped out to an early 6-0 lead through the first three innings. Dan Berg picked up two runs batted in and a run scored in the early innings. The Peacocks added four more in the sixth and five in the seventh to run away from the Bulldogs. Four of the nine runs were driven in by Mendoza on a single in the sixth and a double in the seventh. Brandon Schenk (1-0) picked up the win in his first start of the season. Chris Wlezien, Manson, and Brian Putnam all pitched well in relief of Schenk to preserve the victory for the Peacocks.
 
At the plate, the Peacocks were led by Berg (5-6, 6 runs, 3 rbi), Mendoza (4-7, 7 rbi, 2 runs), Terres (3-9, 4 runs, 4 rbi), and Mitch Walser (1-4, 4 runs, 2 rbi). Ronnie Kurihara went 3-3 in game two with a run scored and an rbi, while Erik Sorensen went 2-2 in game one as he belted two home runs scoring twice and driving in three.
 
The team will be back on the field tomorrow at Bemidji State in Bemidji, Minnesota. The Peacocks and Beavers will meet for a Northern Sun Conference double header. The Peacocks will also be on the road this weekend as they will travel to Winona State to face the NSIC leading Warriors in a four game set.
