Wrestling. Upper Iowa Wrestles Well in Session One; Win Five of Six Matches

The #10 Upper Iowa wrestling program completed the opening session of the 2010 NCAA Division II Championships with a 5-1 record. The 160 National Qualifiers all wrestle once in session one before returning this evening (6 p.m.) for session two. Each wrestler's goal on the first day of the Division II Championships is to win two matches. The equation is simple. Two wins and you are a NCAA All-American; two losses and your run at the championships is over.

Rain, Rain Go Away; Peacock Baseball and Softball Teams Suffer Schedule Changes

The Peacock baseball and softball teams will each lose the next four games on their schedule due to rain in Kansas and Missouri. Announcements came in today from Washburn and Missouri Western that due to rain falling and current field conditions both sites would not be playable in the near future.

Softball. Peacocks Win Two More; Close Out Coco Expo with 5-1 Record

The Upper Iowa softball team closed out a very successful run at the Coco Expo with two more victories this morning. The Peacocks finished with a 5-1 record at the Coco Expo in Titusville, Florida after defeating Carlow by a 9-0 count and Alfred by a score of 2-1. In total, the Peacock offense combined for 30 runs scored in the five games and starting pitcher Christy Loan picked up all five wins for UIU.

Baseball. Peacocks Drop Game to Truman State; Weather Claims Game Two

The Upper Iowa baseball team lost game one of their double header today against the Bulldogs of Truman State and lost game two to the weather. The Peacocks stormed out to an early lead after just one half inning in game one, but were unable to hold the lead and fell in the opener by a 10-7 count. In game two, Upper Iowa jumped on the scoreboard first and had taken a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth when the rain became too much to deal with and the game was called before it could reach the stipulations for an official game. With the single loss on the day, UIU falls to 1-4 on the season.

Softball. Peacocks Split Games on Day Two of Coco Expo

Upper Iowa continued their 2010 season in Titusville, Florida at the Coco Expo today and the Peacocks finished the day with a split. UIU defeated Concord 6-1, but lost to Felician 7-2 to push their record to 3-1 overall.

Christy Loan picked up her third win of the season in game one with her second complete game of the year. Loan struck out six Concord batters, while the Peacock offense put six runs on the board. The UIU bats were led by Casey Coon (3-4), Hannah Jones (2-3, 2 rbi's), and Erin Bennek (1 HR).

Softball. Upper Iowa Opens 2010 with Pair of Wins

Upper Iowa opened their 2010 season in Titusville, Florida at the Coco Expo yesterday with a pair of victories. The Peacocks defeated Felician 3-2 and Mercy 8-3 to jump out to an early 2-0 record.

Christy Loan earned wins in both games for the Peacocks. The senior threw a complete game in the opener and then started and threw five innings in game two to earn the second victory.

Baseball. Peacocks Split with Bulldogs; Earn First Win of 2010

The Upper Iowa baseball team got their first win of the season after a split on the road against Truman State. The two teams met in Emporia, Kansas for the first half of a four game series to be completed today. The Bulldogs brought out the bats in game one dominating the Peacocks 12-2, but Upper Iowa returned the favor in game two jumping on Truman State early and posting their first win of the 2010 season, 8-1. With the split, UIU's record moves to 1-3 on the young season.

Six Peacock Athletic Programs in Action over Spring Break

Upper Iowa University went on Spring Break after final exams were completed this afternoon in Fayette, but for six of UIU's twelve athletic programs... there won't be any break from competition. Highlighting the six program's activities is the wrestling programs appearance in the 2010 NCAA Championships in Omaha, Nebraska.

M. Basketball. Matt Lesan Named a Northern Sun All-Conference Performer

The Northern Sun Conference has handed out their Men's Basketball All-Conference Awards and one Peacock has earned the honor. Matt Lesan (JR / Solon, Iowa) was named to the NSIC All-Conference second team. The all-conference team is made up of 20 young men from the 14-member NSIC; 10 on the first team and 10 on the second team.

Lesan earned his All-NSIC honor after leading the Peacock offense to a near .500 season in conference action; the team completed the 2009-10 season with a 9-11 mark. Upper Iowa finished in a tie for ninth, but finished only one game out of a tie for sixth place. In 27 games this season, he averaged a team-high 11.4 points while shooting 42% from the field, 39% from three, and 81% at the charity stripe. Lesan also averaged 2.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game during his junior year. The Solon, Iowa native's season high of 21 points came twice; the first at Northern State (1/3) and the second at Minnesota Duluth (2/20).

Wrestling. Peacocks Prepare for Division II Championships in Omaha

The Peacock wrestling team, ranked #10 in the NWCA Top 20 Coaches Poll released yesterday, will send six individuals to the NCAA Division II Championships in Omaha, Nebraska. The action on the mats will begin at 11 a.m. next Friday, Mar. 12. Sessions I (11 a.m.) and II (6 p.m.) will take place on Friday, while Sessions III (10 a.m.) and IV (8 p.m.) will be on Saturday, March 13. The NCAA has made streaming video available for free so that fans can watch all the action.

W. Tennis. Peacocks Come Up Big with Three Wins on the Road

The Upper Iowa tennis team began a busy weekend with a trip to St. Peter, Minnesota. The Peacocks were hoping to keep the momentum gained from two NISC victories early in February. They did just that with a 6-3 win over Minnesota State and a 9-0 sweep of Bethany College on Saturday and a 6-3 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday. The wins improved UIU's match record to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the young NSIC season.

The Peacocks will get back on the courts over spring break when they travel to Hilton Head, S.C. from Mar. 8-12. During that span, Upper Iowa will compete against Brevard, East Stroudsburg, UNC Pembroke, Tusculum, and Marian.

Wrestling. #3 Peacocks Claim Third Place at NCAA Super Regional Three; Six Qualify for Nationals

The Upper Iowa wrestling team will be sending six individuals to the National Championships in Omaha, Nebraska on March 12 and 13. The Peacocks finished third at the NCAA Super Regional Three hosted by Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Augustana College earned the Super Regional team title with 120.5 points thanks to four champions, a runner up, and two third place finishers. The #5 Vikings qualified 7 individuals for the NCAA Championships. #10 St. Cloud State finished second at the event with 108.5 points, but qualified eight individuals for Omaha, the most of any team in the region. The Huskies crowned one champion, five runner ups and two third place finishers. Upper Iowa came in third place with 95 points with their three weight class champions and three other National Qualifiers.

The Peacocks claimed three Super Regional titles thanks to excellent days by three seniors; Tyler Mumbulo (125 - #4 NCAA) only needed two wins to win his first regional championship, while Travis Eggers (165 - #2 NCAA) won three matches for his first regional title. Eggers was so dominant in his three matches, which included a pair of major decision wins and a win by fall in the championship match, that he was named the NCAA Super Regional Three Outstanding Wrestler. Mitch Norton (174 - #2 NCAA) claimed his second Super Regional Title with three wins including a win by tech fall and a win by fall.

M. Basketball. Peacocks Complete Sweep of Golden Bears Thanks to Big Second Half

Upper Iowa welcomed Concordia University, St. Paul to Dorman Gym for the final game of the 2009-10 season this afternoon in Fayette. The Peacocks and Golden Bears met earlier in the season on a neutral floor; UIU took the NSIC opener 64-60 in early December. Today's match up was a much more up tempo affair as the teams combined for 157 points. After heading to halftime down ten points, the Peacock outscored their guests by thirteen to claim an 80-77 NSIC victory and improve to 12-15 on the season and 9-11 in the Northern Sun.

Wrestling. #3 UIU Wrestling Prepared for NCAA Super Regional 3 on Sunday

The #3 Upper Iowa wrestling team will head north to Aberdeen, South Dakota this weekend to compete in the NCAA Super Regional 3 hosted by Northern State University on Sunday, Feb. 28. The Peacocks have one goal in mind and make no bones about it... "10 Weights... 10 National Qualifiers!"

The NCAA Super Regional 3 is essentially a Northern Sun Conference Tournament as the participants of the regional are the eight Northern Sun teams that wrestle. They include the #3 Peacocks, as well as #5 Augustana College, #9 Minnesota State, #10 St. Cloud State, Northern State, MSU Moorhead, Southwest Minnesota State, and U-Mary. With four NSIC teams ranked in the most recent top 20 poll and the many ranked wrestlers from the four unranked NSIC squads, there is little doubt across the country that the toughest path to the National Championships in Omaha is the one that runs through Aberdeen this year.
