Baseball. Peacocks and Tigers Cancel Saturday Match Up

The Peacock baseball team's schedule is changing once again. Snow and freezing rain in Kansas has forced the cancellation of Saturday's double header with the Tigers of Fort Hays State. The teams are still attempting to play a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 12 pm. Updates to Sunday's double header will be released on Saturday.

Wrestling. Grimm Named NCAA Division II Coach of the Year

Heath Grimm, Upper Iowa's Head Wrestling Coach, was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year following the 2010 NCAA Division II Championships in Omaha, Nebraska. This award marks the sixth Coach of the Year honor bestowed to the Grimm.

This season Grimm led the Peacock wrestling program to a 13-1 dual meet record, the Northern Sun Conference Championship with a perfect 7-0 record, and a third place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championships.

In Grimm's ten seasons at the helm, the UIU wrestling program has an overall dual meet record of 95-32-2 including an NSIC record of 24-2 in four seasons. Peacock wrestlers have qualified for the NCAA Championships 42 times and have earned All American honors 25 times. Most recently, Grimm's squad qualified six for the national championship and saw four earn All American honors. Four Peacocks have won National Titles including two since Upper Iowa's move up to NCAA Division II.

Baseball. Peacocks Swept by Griffons at Home

The Upper Iowa baseball program looks for its first winning streak of the season and gain momentum towards the opening of the conference slate. Upper Iowa was victorious on Tuesday with a battle against Clarke College in a game that was just added to the schedule. The Peacocks looked to do the same with Missouri Western State. Both opponents were added over the weekend. The Griffons entered the double header with a 7-8 record. They would get to .500 as they took game one 7-3. Missouri Western State took the sweep as they won game two 12-3.

W. Golf. Upper Iowa Opens Spring Season at Poston Butte Invite

The Peacock women's golf team spent their spring break in Florence, Arizona competing in the Poston Butte Invite. Poston Butte Golf Course was a busy place as both men and women's teams hit the links.NISC foe Minnesota State won the event (622) and had the top finisher as Jaymie Halverson finished with a score of 150 (78, 72). The UIU women combined for a two-day score of 666 (335-331).

M. Golf. Peacocks Compete in Arizona to Kick Off Season

The Upper Iowa men's golf team spent their spring break in Florence, Arizona at Poston Butte Golf Course The Peacocks competed against the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul in a dual on day one. Mesa Community College had four individuals play as well. Day two presented new competition as Concordia and Upper Iowa went up against Mesa Community College and Wabash College.

Baseball. Peacocks Open Home Schedule with Extra Inning Win

The Peacocks opened up their home schedule earlier than expected as they played host to Clarke College for a single 9-innning match up. Upper Iowa looked to take advantage of some warmer weather in recent days and the wonderful piece of ground that is Robertson Woods Field. The home opener was an exciting affair as the Peacocks won the ballgame 5-4 in the bottom of the 11th inning with a hit off the bat of Lucas Wilsing.

Baseball. UIU Baseball Opening Home Schedule Early

The Peacock baseball team will be opening their home schedule earlier than previously scheduled with games today and tomorrow, Mar. 16 and 17. Upper Iowa (1-4) has had more games cancelled due to the weather this spring season (8), than they have played (5). Head Coach Mark Danker announced that the team has scheduled three games at home over the next two days to counter all the cancellations.

Upper Iowa will host the Crusaders of Clarke this afternoon at 3 p.m. in one nine-inning game.UIU will then welcome the Griffons of the Missouri Western tomorrow for a pair of seven-inning games beginning at 2 p.m.

W. Tennis. Peacocks Spend Spring Break in Hilton Head, SC

The Upper Iowa women's tennis team spent Spring Break 2010 in Hilton Head, South Carolina to play five non-conference duals in as many days. After going 1-2 over the first three days of competition, heavy rains washed out the final two scheduled matches against Tusculum College and Marian College.UIU kicked off their spring break trip on Monday, Mar. 8 by lining up against the Tornadoes of Brevard College. The Peacocks #2 doubles team of Mallery Cox and Kelsey Montgomery picked up the only win for Upper Iowa on the day as the team fell to BC, 8-1.

Wrestling. Eggers Wins National Championship at 165; Peacocks Tie for Third as a Team

The Peacock wrestling team wrapped up their 2010 NCAA Championships with two matches in the Championship Finals tonight in Omaha, Nebraska. Travis Eggers attained his season-long goal of becoming a National Champion when he defeated Josh Shields, the defending National Champion, at 165 pounds. Eggers becomes the 10th Upper Iowa wrestler to win a National Championship; three Peacocks have won a pair of titles. He is the second NCAA Division II Champion; joining Ryan Phillips, the current Peacock assistant coach, who won the title at 197 pounds in 2007.

Tyler Mumbulo lost his match by major decision to Seth Wright of New Mexico Highlands to finish as the National Runner Up at 125 pounds. Mumbulo finished in eighth place three years ago and in sixth place two years ago before having to take a medical hardship last year after season ending knee surgery.

As a team, the Peacocks tied for third place at the championships with Nebraska-Kearney. The third place finish marks the first NCAA Team Trophy that an Upper Iowa athletics program has claimed since their jump up to NCAA Division II. The last time the UIU wrestling program lofted an NCAA Team Trophy was following the 2002 NCAA Division III Championships when the Peacocks earned National Runner Up honors.

Wrestling. Perfection in Session Three; UIU Wrestlers Go 8-0

Upper Iowa could not have asked for a better outcome to session three at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Four Peacock All-Americans took to the mat and the four combined for an 8-0 record vaulting the team into a tie for second place in the team standings with Nebraska-Kearney. Tyler Mumbulo and Travis Eggers both won their championship semifinals matches to earn a shot at the National Championship tonight in the final session. Kyle Pedretti and Mitch Norton each won all three of their matches in session three to earn third place at the championships. Both young men completed their run at the championships with a 5-1 record. Corrections to the team scores after session two were made overnight; Upper Iowa entered the third session this morning in 5th place, not 7th as previously reported.

Wrestling. Peacocks Remain Steady in Session Two; Mumbulo and Eggers Reach Championship Semis

The Peacock wrestling team continued their success at the 2010 NCAA Division II Championships tonight in Omaha, Nebraska. Four of Upper Iowa's six wrestlers have earned NCAA All-American honors and will continue wrestling tomorrow in session three. Tyler Mumbulo and Travis Eggers are still in the hunt for a national title and will wrestle in the championship semifinals tomorrow morning. Kyle Pedretti and Mitch Norton can still finish as high as third place and will wrestle tomorrow as well. Derek Stolarzyk (1-2) and Justin Decker (0-2) wrapped up their time at the championships during session two this evening.

The #10 Upper Iowa wrestling program completed the opening session of the 2010 NCAA Division II Championships with a 5-1 record. The 160 National Qualifiers all wrestle once in session one before returning this evening (6 p.m.) for session two. Each wrestler's goal on the first day of the Division II Championships is to win two matches. The equation is simple. Two wins and you are a NCAA All-American; two losses and your run at the championships is over.

Rain, Rain Go Away; Peacock Baseball and Softball Teams Suffer Schedule Changes

The Peacock baseball and softball teams will each lose the next four games on their schedule due to rain in Kansas and Missouri. Announcements came in today from Washburn and Missouri Western that due to rain falling and current field conditions both sites would not be playable in the near future.

Wrestling. Peacocks Prepare for Division II Championships in Omaha

The Peacock wrestling team, ranked #10 in the NWCA Top 20 Coaches Poll released yesterday, will send six individuals to the NCAA Division II Championships in Omaha, Nebraska. The action on the mats will begin at 11 a.m. next Friday, Mar. 12. Sessions I (11 a.m.) and II (6 p.m.) will take place on Friday, while Sessions III (10 a.m.) and IV (8 p.m.) will be on Saturday, March 13. The NCAA has made streaming video available for free so that fans can watch all the action.
